Two people have been killed and 20 injured, one critically, when the roof of a four-story parking garage collapsed this morning at about 11:20 a.m. at the corner of Rechov Hanechoshet and Habarzel in Ramat Hachayal near Assuta Medical Center in Tel Aviv.
Police officers and search and rescue teams are at the scene, still searching for a few people who are believed to be trapped.
Firefighters dug a tunnel through the rubble and sand to rescue some of those trapped.
One person who works in a nearby building said that “It felt like an earthquake.”
21 workers, both Israeli and Palestinian, were rescued from the collapse in the first hour after the accident. Magen David Adom personnel took 24 people to local hospitals, including Ichilov, Beilinson, Tel Hashomer and Asuta. The latter is located across the street from the garage.
Ichilov set up an emergency hotline, 1255133, for those looking to determine if their relatives are among those injured or trapped.
The collapse is believed to have been due to a structural failure after a tractor drove across the upper story of the garage.
