Question: Is displaying the American flag considered a gentile ideal?

Answer from Rav Avigdor Miller zt”l:

Let me tell you something. Fifty years ago, I wouldn’t have spoken about that. I have been speaking more than fifty years in public. I didn’t speak about American flags. We don’t need it. Who needs American flags? It wasn’t necessary.

Today, I say, if you want to do it, I say yasher koach. Do you know why? Because all the reshaim are trampling on the flag and they’re trying to desecrate America. You know why? Not because they’re good goyim, but because they are reshaim gemurim. The liberals are trying to ruin everything.

And when that wicked Supreme Court permitted burning an American flag and said you cannot make a law against it, it was a desecration of America.

After all, America is a good country. We came from countries where we were persecuted and this country gave us all the rights. I say we should kiss the ground of America. I was in Europe for some time; I went to study in yeshiva. I came back and I saw that this was a blessed country. It’s a gift from Hashem to us. Shouldn’t we appreciate it?

Therefore, I say that a Jew should hang out the flag. Yes, today, yes. I won’t say you’re a sinner if you don’t, but I think it’s a good thing to hang out the flag today. It’s not a contradiction, not a contradiction by any means.

We hang out the flag from this shul on the Fourth of July.

  1. Teach your children that America is one nation under G-d.

    Given Washington told is himself we were always welcome here, we should enjoy true patriotism.

    If Hashem gave us our freedom to practice religion, this is a nation for all.

    A jew can have non-jewish friends and truly serve as a light for the nations.

    Fly the flag.

    Have a good fourth.

    And remember America is blessed.

    G-d bless America. It probably saved Israel.

  2. I had the privilege of being at the shiur when R’ Avigdor Miller made that statement. Nothing he said was “off the cuff”. He said everything from the vantage point of his Torah knowledge and broad prospective. His view on the current state of affairs is sorely missed!

  3. The question is what would Rav Miller zt”l say if he was with us now?

    Since the USA ‘Supreme Court’ just ruled, a few days ago, legitimizing toeivah, what the Torah calls abomination and very severe sin, even for non Jews, in open defiance of basic morality and the sheva mitzvos bnei Noach (The Noachide laws), it is now a nation in open rebellion against G-d, something Rav Miller zt”l would surely be very upset about.

    In view of that and similar developments in recent years, it needs to be reexamined if frum Yidden should still be flying a flag which is now associated with such moral corruption.

    Patriot though he was,in today’s changing climate and federal enforced spiraling mores ,he would surely have said to take the flag down

  6. It’s all about hakoras hatov to the country one lives in. If America has allowed freedom of religious practice, allowing Jews to educate their children as they wish, funding educational programs, aiding the sick and elderly, why shouldn’t Jews fly the American flag? Same for Jews living in Israel or anywhere in the world where flying the flag is a way of expressing acknowledgement and gratitude for acceptance and aid to citizens in Jewish communities.

  7. Personal question for M: Did you fly the flag BEFORE the supreme court decision?

    Eliyohu Hanavi gave kovod to Achav. When Yirmioyhu spoke about seeking the best for your country, when the Misnha say to daven for your government etc they weren’t talking about governments led by Tzadikim.

    I remember Rav Pam used to fly the flag from his house on July 4th. Even after Roe vs Wade.
