Question: Is displaying the American flag considered a gentile ideal?

Answer from Rav Avigdor Miller zt”l:

Let me tell you something. Fifty years ago, I wouldn’t have spoken about that. I have been speaking more than fifty years in public. I didn’t speak about American flags. We don’t need it. Who needs American flags? It wasn’t necessary.

Today, I say, if you want to do it, I say yasher koach. Do you know why? Because all the reshaim are trampling on the flag and they’re trying to desecrate America. You know why? Not because they’re good goyim, but because they are reshaim gemurim. The liberals are trying to ruin everything.

And when that wicked Supreme Court permitted burning an American flag and said you cannot make a law against it, it was a desecration of America.

After all, America is a good country. We came from countries where we were persecuted and this country gave us all the rights. I say we should kiss the ground of America. I was in Europe for some time; I went to study in yeshiva. I came back and I saw that this was a blessed country. It’s a gift from Hashem to us. Shouldn’t we appreciate it?

Therefore, I say that a Jew should hang out the flag. Yes, today, yes. I won’t say you’re a sinner if you don’t, but I think it’s a good thing to hang out the flag today. It’s not a contradiction, not a contradiction by any means.

We hang out the flag from this shul on the Fourth of July.

See below for photos of an American flag hanging today at Khal Ateres Yeshaya in Lakewood, NJ. Khal Ateres Yeshaya is led by Rav Miller’s grandson, Rav Simcha Bunim Cohen. Rav Cohen’s mother-in-law, Rebbetzin Brog, is a daughter of Rav Miller.

  1. I saw similarly the same answer in the book “Q&A Thursday Nights with Rabbi Avigdor Miller” where he quotes Reb Yisroel Salanter, that once came into a big shul one Shabbos, and the gabi skiped the prayer for the country, and he went personaly to the bima to read it.

  2. The world truly has felt bereft of Hagaon HaRav Avigdor Miller ztvk’l zy’a ever since he physically left us.

  3. “Khal Ateres Yeshaya is led by Rav Miller’s grandson, Rav Simcha Bunim Cohen. Rav Cohen’s mother-in-law, Rebbetzin Brog, is a daughter of Rav Miller.”

Thank you for all the details. We wouldn’t of known otherwise.

  4. Mazel Tov to the Rav and Rebbitzen Cohen on the Chasunah of their son Eliyahu Zev last night. You could see and feel the love the Rov and Rebbitzen have for the kehila and visa versa

  5. My brother suggested I would possibly like this web site. He was totally right. This put up truly made my day. You cann’t believe just how so much time I had spent for this info! Thank you!
