uman[Photos below.] The pre-Rosh Hashanah wave of visitors to the town of Uman in Ukraine is peaking with thousands having arrived from Eretz Yisroel, the United States and elsewhere to visit the kever of Ravhttp://matzav.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif Nachman of Breslov. Overall, some 40,000 people – 25,000 Breslover chassidim and others – will spend Rosh Hashanah in Uman.

It is over 200 years since the petirah of Rav Nachman.

Rav Nachman was niftar in 1810 at the age of 38.

Hundreds of housing units in Uman’s Pushkina neighborhood serve as hostels for rent during Rosh Hashanah. About 3,000 people will sleep in a tent city erected nearby.

Heichal Hachnosas Orchim, a three-acre catering compound, will produce some 15,000 meals over the course of the Yom Tov. The hall’s 25-person staff has stocked up on tons of bread, rice, vegetables, fruit and plastic cutlery, as well as nearly 20 tons of meat and 13,800 whole chickens. By the end of Yom Tov, about 192,000 challah bilkelach will have been baked in the compound’s ovens.

People have always gone to Uman for Rosh HaShanah, even when the Iron Curtain was still up. In the 20 years since Communism fell, it has naturally become easier, and now that Israelis no longer need visas in order to go, it has become easier still.
