kosel-women-of-the-wallYerushalayim Police today arrested the leader of the Women of the Wall group for carrying a Sefer Torah while ‘praying’ at the Kosel, Army Radio reported. Anat Hoffman, the women’s ‘prayer group leader,’ was arrested and taken in for questioning after she was caught holding a Sefer Torah in violation of a High Court ruling prohibiting women from reading a Sefer Torah at the Kosel.Dozens of Women of the Wall members arrived at the site this morning.

“This is another example of the ultra-Orthodox establishment imposing its stances on the public,” a spokeswoman for the group said.

In November 2009, another of the group’s women was arrested for wearing a tallis. At the time, Kosel Rov Rav Shmuel Rabinowitz said the act was a provocation meant to turn the wall into a fighting ground.

The Masorti Movement said in response to Hoffman’s arrest: “The arrest of the Women of the Wall chairwoman is a foolish act. The Western Wall plaza belongs to the entire nation and the charedim have expropriated it.”

May those who have strayed far from the path of Torah see the light.

  1. yes the western wall is for ALL JEWS but these things that the woman do are against Halacha (jewish law)These things they did of putting on a talis & holding a sefer torah etc… are against the sin of LO SILBASH-a man may not do or wear clothing a woman wears or does & vice versa-which is why woman are not allowed to do these things.
MAY WE ALL LEARN FROM THIS

  2. “The Masorti Movement said in response to Hoffman’s arrest: “The arrest of the Women of the Wall chairwoman is a foolish act. The Western Wall plaza belongs to the entire nation and the charedim have expropriated it.””

Minor correction here, fellas. The Wall belongs to the JEWISH nation when they behave like Jews. Stop calling us charedim and we’ll stop calling you freiers. We’re just Jews, how about putting down your ramkol and joining us?

  3. It’s not about how observant you are, it is about how much of the Torah you accept or reject. Better to lean in the direction of the ones who KNOW what G-D likes best, especially in His own territory

  4. Response to Masorati spokesperson:
Is it OK for a non-observant Jew to brink money or solicit funds at the Kotel on Shabbos or Yom Tov? They feel that their beliefs are also being impinged. Maybe they should be allowed to have a pork roast (Ch’V’Sh) there also.

  5. shtuyot !
neither tefilin nor a sefer Torah is a “male” garment.
women are paturot memizwoth sheyesh sman grama, but if they want to do so they become schar for doing the mitzweh.
what people mean with lilbosh gever is that these thing have become like a levush to men since women haven`t never done this. butconsider it says in the gemorroh that even a goy gets schar if he puts on tefilin ,not the same schar as a yid but schar.

  6. I will refer you to the early tshuvot in the Sredei Eish. Regarding Mitvat Asey SheHaZiman Gramah, There are 3 Shitot.

Sephardim Believe that If a women performs such a Mitzva it is Assur and She is Over on Baal Toef.

The Rabbeinu Tam- Holds the well known Ashkenazi Shita of Gadol Hametzuveh VeOseh Mi SheAyno Metzuveh. There is no issur, she gets schar but not as much as a man. Problem with this shita is How Can she Make the Bracha of ViTzivanu.

The Sreydei Eish quotes a Raivad, that holds that wome and men have exactly the same Chiyuv.
The only difference is that Mitzvat Assey She HaZiman Gramah is a Pitur. In that situation a woman has a chiyuv so that if she performs such a mitzva she can make the bracha of Aser Kidshanu Bi mitzvotav Vitzivanu…..
