After months of speculation, New York City’s top cop has publicly stated his intentions when it comes to running for mayor, WCBS 880′s John Metaxas reported.

“Certainly flattering to be spoken about, but I have no plans to run for elected office,” Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, there were reports that Kelly would be open to running for mayor.

But Democratic political consultant Hank Sheinkopf told WCBS 880′s Rich Lamb that while Kelly would be a formidable candidate for mayor if he were to run, history shows GOP candidates only win when there’s a crisis.

“Kelly has always said that being mayor or running for mayor wasn’t in his DNA. Ray Kelly is a cop. Does he really want to subject himself to the slings and arrows?” Baruch College professor Doug Muzio told Lamb.

When it came to whether he would be open to staying on as the city’s top cop under the next mayor, Kelly left himself some wiggle room.

“I just don’t want to get into that issue,” Kelly said.

Kelly has been police commissioner for a decade, since Mayor Michael Bloomberg took office in 2002 and has been the face of security in the city in the post-9/11 era.
