A 27-year-old Jewish woman that was stabbed early Wednesday morning in the Monkland Village of Montreal was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, a police official told JP Wednesday afternoon.

The stabbing took place when the woman, identified by sources as Smadar Brandes, was walking home around 12:45 a.m., and was stabbed at the intersection of Monkland Ave. and Girouard Ave.

Witnesses called police, and responding officers discovered Brandes with serious stab wounds to her upper torso. She was then transferred to a local hospital in critical condition, police said.

Investigators began canvassing for the suspect. With the help of K9 dogs, they were able to locate and arrest a 25 year old suspect.

On Wednesday afternoon, investigators confirmed that Brandes didn’t know her assailant, and that the suspect was under the influence of drugs when he attacked her. According to investigators, she was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The suspect is set to appear in front of a judge tomorrow, and is expected to be charged with attempted murder.
