Road Closures Set, Police Ready As 45,000 Runners Plan To Participate In New York City Marathon

The New York City Marathon is set to begin in the morning, and the NYPD has pulled out all the stops for security in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings earlier this year.

All 45,000 runners will be screened, and their bags will be checked, at the start point Sunday morning. A total of 1,500 TV-quality surveillance cameras have been trained on the course – especially concentrated on the finish line area.

Police helicopters, harbor units and scuba divers also have been assigned.Street closures and parking restrictions are expected to cause traffic delays. The use of public transportation is highly recommended.

ROAD CLOSURES

Beginning at midnight tonight, the upper level of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic. At approximately 7 a.m. rolling street closures will commence along the route in preparation for the marathon.
