bin-laden-nyA poll finds that New York City residents met Osama bin Laden’s death with a mixture of happiness, surprise and relief – and the president’s approval ratings among New Yorkers jumped 10 percent.

The NY1-Marist Poll results released Wednesday show that 39 percent of city residents surveyed said they felt happy upon hearing that bin Laden was dead. Another 24 percent said they felt surprised, 10 percent felt excited and 7 percent felt relieved.

The survey also finds that 69 percent of the city’s registered voters said President Barack Obama was doing a good or excellent job. That’s up from 59 percent a week earlier.

The telephone poll of 502 randomly selected New York City residents was done Monday. The margin of error is plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

  1. Happy??? Not the right word…”b’nfol oivecha al tismach”. Jews aren’t happy when people die — even evil ones. It’s the reason we don’t say Hallel the last 2 days of pesach? “Maaseh yadai toviim bayom v’atem omrim shira?” Arabs are happy and rejoice when people die. They celebrated on 9/11 and passed out caniy when the Fogel family was brutally murderred. So no, we’re not happy. Relieved? For sure. But happy is not the right word to use.
