The president took to Twitter on Wednesday to directly rebut GOP critics of the Iran nuclear deal, just hours after delivering a speech at American University that compared the Republican caucus to Iranian hardliners.
In a tweet ahead of the speech, McConnell, the Senate majority leader, wrote: “Let’s hope @POTUS avoids obviously untrue talking points about the #IranDeal being a choice between a bad deal and war. It isn’t.”
In the hours after the speech, Obama shot back: “The choice is ultimately between diplomacy and war. Iran’s nuclear program accelerates if Congress kills this deal.”
The president wasn’t finished. He then went after Scalise, the House majority whip, who had tweeted earlier in the day: “Mr. President, Americans deserve to know the details about the secret side deals. #IranDeal”
Obama’s response on his @POTUS account? “Important detail – there are no secret deals. My staff can brief you on any question about any part of the deal.”
The exchanges were retweeted hundreds of times within minutes.
