chilean-president-sebastian-pinera-obama“I’m going to sit at the President of the United States’ desk,” said Chilean President Sebastián Piñera as he sat down at the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, breaking the White House’s political protocols in front of a visibly surprised President Barack Obama.

Piñera’s decision, seemingly done spontaneously and without consulting Obama’s advisers or security personnel, was the highlight of the Chilean leader’s first official visit to the United States. (Check Out The Video Above)

In an apparent justification for his actions, Piñera said: “You know my daughter was born in the United States.”

One of the individuals who witnessed the incident asked, amid the surprise and laughter that was heard in the Oval Office, how many other presidents in the World had done that. Without any visible irritation, but with a hint of surprise and perhaps dissaproval on his face, Obama responded: “He’s the only one.”

During the one hour long meeting between Obama and Piñera, the leaders discussed issues concerning the bilateral relations between both countries.

President Barack Obama welcomed Piñera to the White House on Tuesday and praised the South American country’s growing economy and democratic advancement, according to the Associated Press.

  1. I’m just curious if Obama also bowed to Piñera, while Piñera was sitting in Obama’s seat. Or is bowing just reserved for the Saudi King, and the Chinese dictator? Either way, those bowing expeditions certainly had its affect, that now Piñera can seem macho by doing this. He also knew, that he and his country won’t suffer any consequences. The opposite is true: he has now boosted himself.

Don’t worry though. Obama will come after you and your freedom…..

  2. I guess that eating at the Deli is out? It would be nice if the President of Chile offered Mr. Obama a three year supply of fresh fruit to compensate. Really now..

  3. The President didn’t look at all upset in the video – just surprised and a little amused.

It was probably also a bit of a statement by Pres. Pinera that he was not going to be dictated to, as so many South American countries have been pushed around by the US. We have a terrible record with our neighbors to the south, and perhaps this was his way of making a point in a gentle way while making a joke.
