Liberty Island has been closed and roughly 3,000 visitors are being evacuated after a propane tank fire at 12:15 p.m. Monday on the home of the Statue of Liberty, a National Parks Service spokesman said.
Jerry Willis, public affairs officer for the Statue of Liberty National Monument, said one of two roughly 20-pound propane tanks caught fire in a construction accident and was quickly extinguished.
One construction worker suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene, he said.
