Protests Resume in Yerushalayim, Police Close Streets

protestProtests in Yerushalayim against the municipality’s decision to open a city parking lot on Shabbos has resumed this afternoon. Yerushalayim Police closed off Rechov Shivtei Yisroel and Rechov Yechezkel, after dozens of dumpsters were set on fire in protest of arrests made during yesterday’s protest. Mass police presence was on the scene.Tens of thousands – estimated at 30,000-40,000 took part in an atzeres tefillah on Rechov Bar Ilan on Friday night.

Yesterday, hundreds protested against the decision to open the Karta parking lot on Shabbos – a move the municipality said was meant to resolve the growing parking distress plaguing the city on weekends.

Fifty-seven people were arrested during several demonstrations yesterday, the majority of whom were detained in Meah Shearim.

Hundreds of protestors gathered in the neighborhood.

Also yesterday, about 1,000 secular people gathered at Kikar Safra Square to express their support for the decision to open the parking lot on Shabbos.

Several people were injured during yesterday’a activities, A 20-year-old bochur was taken to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in serious condition after falling off a fence, and a six-year-old boy was lightly injured.
