rav-elyashiv-rav-mishkovskyA businessman with extensive holdings and dealings went to Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, and other gedolim, to receive a bracha for his business. The businessman was urged to support the Torah community, according to a report in Mishpacha, and he agreed to do so, committing half of the profits of his business to supporting Torah in Eretz Yisroel. In exchange for his supporting the Torah community, he would want them to daven for his success, which Rav Elyashiv said they would do, according to the story as reported by Rafi G. of Life in Israel. The man then asked a shailah as to whether it would be permissible for him to do business with Iran via a third party.

Rav Elyashiv paskened that it is assur and said that it is helping our enemy, which is forbidden. Rav Elyashiv added that the man should not think that the Iranians will be looking out for his success. Eventually, they will find out that a Jew is behind the middleman, and they will only participate as long as it is convenient for them. Once they discover that their business partner is Jewish, he said, they will look for any way to cause his downfall.

The fellow later asked for Rav Elyashiv to promise that his business would succeed in the zechus of his commitment to support Torah. Rav Elyashiv said that he could not make such a promise or guarantee. All he could promise is that they would daven for his behalf to the best of their abilities.

  1. the key to success in business is customer service & honesty BUT the key to Success in Yiddishkeit (judaism) is FAITH & TRUST . if yoy keep your faith in H-shem then everything will be alright rather a person gets a bracha from a rav/rebbe or not.

  2. Famous story about a childless couple who went to a rebbe for a bracha. The rebbe refused, despite the husband’s increasing the value of the pidyon.

Finally, the wife said, “why do we need the rebbe, we can ask Hashem for a brachah.”

To which the rebbe responded, “THAT’S what I wanted to hear!!”

  3. To Mash Agent- you have no clue how powerful the bracha of a gadol is- and they give them for a reason! also, whats wrong with asking a gadol to daven 4 you- all davening is plural
