yisroel-sholom-yosef-friedmanIt is with great sadness that we report the passing earlier this week of R’ Yisroel Sholom Yosef Friedman zt”l, who was niftar on Tuesday, on his 95th birthday. R’ Yisroel was a son of the Boyaner Rebbe, Rav Mordechai Shlomo of Boyan-New York, and a brother-in-law of Rabbi Haskel Lookstein, whose sister he married. This quiet, unassuming man managed the Ruzhiner Yeshivah in Yerushalayim for close to sixty years.

R’ Yisroel had regal bearing, was highly intelligent and was a prince of a person. His humility was exceptional and his unassuming nature belied his acumen and knowledge.

The levaya was held first in New York City and then in Eretz Yisroel, where kevurah took place on Har Hazeisim.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. He used to write personal letters to hundreds, if not thousands, of individuals asking for contributions to the yeshiva. Each one had a personal touch, asking about the health of parent, or expressing fond memories of a zeide. When it was suggested to him that he could use a word processor to artificially personalize letters, he adamantly refused because he valued the expression of closeness to each person. When he wrote to her rabbonim or rebbeim of modest means, he would add “My father said everyone who helps me in supporting the Ruzhiner Yeshiva is a Shutaf, and even a small shutfus counts.”
I once saw him greeted by Boyaner chassidim at the airport in Tel Aviv and they kept on talking to him very formally as if he was a very honored person, He answered sharply “Stop calling me Reb Yisroel, I am just plain Srul, and if you don’t call me that I will get in a shared taxi and go to Yerusholayim by myself.”
    Chaval al De’Avdin!
