  1. Huge loss for klal yisroel. Yona zt”l was a simple bal habyas yet such a huge bal chesed. He never lived for himself. His doors were opened day and night. Always a smile and zisa welcome. And it was so sincere. He was kind to every yid that crossed his path always making you feel like his closest chaver. I will miss Yona’s friendly greeting’s.

And such a wonderful ehrlicha mishapcha both in torah and avdos hashem. The family and Yona are such an ish shalom.

Its hard to find such simple yet “dehubina” yidden like yona nowadays. he will be irreplaceable.

May he be a melitz yashur for us all.

It’s scary how so many are passing on. Just now I got a call about a fellow about 60 years old R Aharon Ravitz was nifter with his levaya being tonight at 12 ave and 48 st tenker shul 7 pm

  3. Big loss for Klal Yisroel. Reb Yonah always had a smile and greeted everyone warmly. He was the melava malka chairman for many years at the Yeshiva Torah Vodaath Melava Malka, and the smile with which he spoke radiated such a simchas hachaim. He had a tremendous ahavah for Torah Vodaath in particular, as he was a talmid of the Rosh Hayeshiva, Rav Pam zt”l, and maintained a very close relationship with the Mashgiach, Harav Moshe Wolfson Shlit”a. 4. I was not as a friend or acquaintance of the niftar; I don’t think we ever even exchanged any words. Rather I was a fellow mispallel in Emunas Yisrael.

There were many things that brought me to Emunas Yisrael, many years ago. One of them, was the opportunity to be up close with many people who were Oivdim, that I could observe and learn from. Over time R’ Yonah became one of them.

R’ yonah was well known for his zedakah, that was not what impressed me. I B”H know many baalei zedakah. What I found unique about R’ Yonah was the way he communicated with every single person who approached him; without exception. An Eidelkeit, seiver panim yafos, savlanus, to an extent I haven’t seen elsewhere. This sever panim yafos and neimus was an integral part of his personality, and was visible in every exchange with the many who communicated with him.

And there was another uniqueness to him. I had the good fortune to attend many of the Sheves Achim’s (a/k/a Tish) with the mashgiach, Rav Wolfson. The experience can not be reduced to words. But this much I can relate. I had the opportunity to sit opposite R’ Yonah for many years. To observe someone of his stature to sit with absolute bitul, was a powerful lesson from the 5th shulchan aruch. Moreover, I was repeatedly nispael seeing how R’ Yonah who was visibly exhausted from a hard week, would project newly found koichos, during the zemiros and Toirah.

R’ Yoinah was a unique multi faceted individual. While he is most known for his Zedaka, his uniqueness was his being an Ish goimel chesed in a major way, both in aichus and in kamus. A synthesis of the epitome of chesed and chasid.

    AshreY ayin sherasa es zois.

    • Beautiful comment. I don’t want to add much lest I detract from your great comment. But if I can add a few more attributes,

      1) The zedakah that R Yonah contributed was way out of proportion to his lifestyle or livelihood. He always lived very pashut. Both the monies he distributed and time he spent helping others far exceeded what would have been the norm of such an individual.

      2) He was a person that can be an oved hashem one day in emunas yisroel and the next day in places not as chasidish oriented as emunas yisroel. And he never looked down at others who lived different than him. Always dan lchaf zechus

      3) He was a man that suffered yesorim. Not only did he have yisuri eyuav this past year, but he become a yasum at the age of 12 as well. Yet, he always did everything with such a shmiechal.

If I only I can get one more friendly pat on the cheek from this tzadik I’d run over to him this second and savior that moment

  5. It was the summer of 1956 where we shared a “bunk” in Camp Munk. It was also the last time I saw or spoke to him. I have a nice photo taken in front of our “bunk” . It’s on my Facebook page
