It is with great sadness that we report the passing today of Rav Chaim Yosef Goldberg zt”l of Kiryat Mattersdorf, Yerushalayim. He was 67 years old.

Rav Chaim, who hailed from Chicago, Illinois, and was a talmid of Rav Dovid Soloveitchik, was one of the great pillars of chessed and tzedakah in Eretz Yisroel, who supported an untold number of people anonymously and with dignity.

Rav Chaim passed away this morning at the Hadassah Hospital in Ein Kerem after battling a serious illness for four and a half years.

The levayah was held earlier today at Rav Dovid Soloveitchik’s Yeshivas Brisk on Rechov Grossberg in Yerushalayim, followed by kevurah at the Eretz Hachaim cemetery in Bet Shemesh.

Klal Yisroel has lost a genuine tzaddik and truly God-fearing baal chessed who led a life of exemplary avodas Hashem, with unbelievable deeds of tzedakah and altruism, much of which is not known to the public.

Rav Chaim, an outstanding talmid chochom and yorei Shomayim, was a patron of thousands of people, including widows and orphans, as well as poor families, talmidei chachomim, and depressed, heartbroken and disadvantaged Yidden.

His tzedakah endeavors were carried out with meticulousness, with every penny he raised reaches its destination, without any accolades or fanfare.

From Dan to Be’er Sheva, Rav Chaim helped Jews across the country, thus earning the title of one of the greatest baalei chesed of his generation. No one was a more trusted gabbai tzedakah than Rav Chaim, who never took a cent from the money he raised and was remarkably scrupulous with the vast funds that passed through his hands.

About four and a half years ago, he was diagnosed with a ravaging disease, yet he lived every day of those four and half years with thanks to Hashem, and despite the unbearable agony and exhausting treatments he underwent, he never stopped his acts of chesed, continuing to help others until his last day.

Last night, hours before his petirah, Rav Chaim asked those close to him to make sure to continue his efforts, especially now, with Pesach approaching, a time when he would annual distribute huge sums of money to struggling families.

Rav Chaim was a brother of brother of Rav Aharon Dovid Goldberg, rosh yeshiva of Telshe Yeshiva in Cleveland, as well as Rav Moshe Goldberg, Rav Yehuda Goldberg and Rav Ephraim Goldberg.

Rav Chaim is survived by two sons and three daughters, as well as thousands of Jews bereft of the benefactor who kept them going and served as a shliach Hashem to provide them with desperately needed funds.

The world is a poorer place with the passing of Rav Chaim.

Yehi zichro boruch.

Such a terrible loss. I was one of the many who were zoche to watch this Tzaddik Yesod Olam in action. Selfless, dedicated and always giving. He considered it his life mission to help others, and he has indeed fulfilled his mission.
May HKB”H continue to help the poor among Klal Yisroel! May R’Chaim have an everlasting Aliyos Neshama…
