yehudah-glick-rav-chaim-kanievskyMaking the Seder for the extended mishpacha seems like child’s play compared with Rabbi Yehudah Glick’s Pesach preparations. The New York-born Rabbi Glick is getting ready to lead world Jewry in a KorbanPesach tomorrow, April 18, the first night of Pesach.

Rabbi Glick, who lives in Otniel, in the West Bank, says he has the backing of leading rabbonim and has contracted farmers to provide him with 300 sheep and goats for the korban, should Moshiach arrive. He also put 20 shochtim on standby, and, for those who wish to take part, but who live outside Yerushalayim, he made Seder-night accommodations within walking distance of the Old City, according to a report in The Forward.

Those who want a “share” of an animal so that they can take part in the korban can purchase one over the phone, by credit card for 12 shekels, or about $3. Over 3,000 people have signed up so far.

“A person who is not prepared for the korbanos is like somebody who invites all his friends to a wedding and waits until they arrive to make preparations,” Rabbi Glick said. “…we have to be ready and express to God how badly we want it.”

The arrival of Moshian isn’t Rabbi Glick’s only hope for facilitating the korban. He cites a shitah that the Korban Pesach should take place with or without the Bais Hamikdosh as long as Klal Yisroel has access to the Har Habayis. He is requesting permission to hold the Korban Pesach there, a request that, until now, the Israeli authorities have denied, apparently fearing an inflammation of Jewish-Muslim tensions. The site is managed by the Muslim Waqf, which, with Israel’s acquiescence, bans individual prayer by non-Muslims, and, by extension, mass communal sacrifices. Rabbi Glick has twice petitioned the high court, without success, to overrule the police.

Last Pesach, The Forward reports, he and one of his goats were detained by police near Shaar Yaffo. Officers suspected that he was going to try to shecht the goat in violation of the law; he insists that he is law-abiding citizen, and was only going to perform a mock korban at an Old City shul.

Until now, support for the korban regardless of Moshiach‘s arrival was marginal. But early this month, Rabbi Glick visited Rav Chaim Kanievskyat his home in Bnei Brak with one of the lambs he planned to shecht. Rav Chaim inspected the animal, asked questions about the program and gave his support, said Rabbi Glick.

The program, he says, also has the backing of Rav Gershon Edelstein, rosh yeshiva at Yeshiva Ponovezh.

In the event of the arrival of Moshiach or a U-turn on the part of Israeli authorities, all will be free to watch the shechting, but only people who paid to sign up to Rabbi Glick’s program will be able to eat the meat. They are guaranteed the religiously prescribed ounce of meat and a room in Yerushalayim, if needed. Rabbi Glick runs the program under the Chafetz Chaim Holy Heritage Temple Foundation, a registered not-for-profit organization established for the purpose, and promises to distribute the subscription money to tzedakah if the korban doesn’t take place, reports The Forward.

  1. #5: It depends on who you ask. We are forbidden to go onto the spot where the Kodesh HaKadashim was. We don’t know exactly where that is, but we do know places where it was not. According to some, we are allowed to walk to those places.

  2. 1) there is NO WAY that R’ Chaim Kanievsky was advocating the schecting of the Korbon Peseach now
    2) even if we can schect it utilizing the principle of “tumah hutrah b’tzibur”, the meatfrom the korbon is NOT eaten; it is burned because of the tumah

  3. Please note that Rabbi Glick is not intending to stam azei shecht korbon Pesach. He is preparing them in the event that Moshiach comes ( B’meheira b’yameinu) in time to be makriv the korbonos.
