It has been reported that Rabbi Hanoch Hecht of the Rhinebeck Jewish Center will be saying Birchas Hachama tomorrow morning together with his kehillah in hot air balloons, way up in the sky. Today, Rabbi Hecht sent Matzav.com a statement explaining why his congregation will recite the once-in-28-years bracha from hot air balloons.
” I’m doing this is to draw attention to the mitzvah. It’s a ritual that most Jews have never even heard of. I would like to get as many people excited about this as possible, in hopes that they’ll take the opportunity to do a mitzvah that only comes out a couple times in a lifetime.
“The altitude has nothing to do with the ritual. The blessing can be said from everywhere. As long as you can see the sun itself then you can recite the blessing.
“This is a very exciting time. Birchas Hachama happens once every 28 years, and has fallen out on the eve of Passover only three times in history.”
