joseph-grunblattIt is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rabbi Joseph Grunblatt zt”l of Forest Hills, Queens.

Rabbi Grunblatt was a noted community leader and rov who made an enormous contribution to Jewish life.

Rabbi Grunblatt was a musmach of Yeshiva Torah Vodaas in Brooklyn and subsequently learned at Bais Medrash Elyon in Monsey. He studied under Rav Reuven Grozovsky zt”l among the other gedolei Torah of these two bastions of Torah.

Rabbi Grunblatt was a rov in Saratoga Springs, NY from 1953 to 1956 and at Congregation Shevet Achim in Montreal from 1956 to 1967. He became the rov of the Queens Jewish Center in 1967, remaining in that position for some four decades.

Rabbi Grunblatt graduated Magna Cum Laude from City College, NY, and pursued graduate studies at the New School of Social Research in NY and McGill University in Montreal.

Rabbi Grunblatt was an Adjunct Professor of Jewish Studies at Touro College and the author of Exile and Redemption – Meditations on Jewish History and many articles in various publications.

He was the Chairman of Rabbinic Delegation to Joint Kashrus Commission O.U. – R.C.A.

Over the years, Rabbi Grunblatt was a vice president of the Rabbinical Council of America, president of the Vaad Harabanim of Queens, and president of the Quebec Region of the RCA.

During his tenure in Montreal, he was instrumental in founding Yeshiva Gedola in Montreal.

Rabbi Grunblatt retired in 2006 after nearly 40 years as the rov of the Queens Jewish Center.

Rabbi Grunblatt is survived by his devoted wife, Rebbetzin Bella Grunblatt, and his family, including his son, Rav Akiva Grunblatt, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim of Queens.

The levaya will take place this morning, at 11 o’clock, at the Queens Jewish Center, located at 66-05 108th Street in Forest Hills NY.

  1. I send my heartfelt condolences to the entire QJC congregation and especially to the Grunblatt family.
    Rav Grunblatt was a leader and scholar and I will always remember him as the rav of the shul where I grew up. He helped me a great deal, spiritually, when we had a lose in our family, although I live so far away. The rav wrote to me and kept in touch with the doings of my family in Israel.
    He will be missed greatly.
    May Hashem comfort you with all the mourners at the Gates of Zion.

  2. Rabbi Grunblatt was an amazing teacher whether shiurim in his shul or at Queens College. He was always open to questions and found the time to answer all of them. He was a royal Talmid CHocham.
