Rabbi Dr. Shabtai is a fellow of the Wexner Kollel Elyon of Rabbeinu Yitzchok Elchonon (RIETS). He received his semichah from RIETS in 2009 and MD from NYU School of Medicine in 2010. He is the author of the book Defining the Moment: Understanding Brain Death in Halacha (Shoresh Press: New York, 2012) and various articles relating to science / medicine and halacha.

  1. The Gemoroh and all Rishonim including the Noiseh Keilim on Shilchon Oruch, all clearly say that Metzitza is done for, Safety Precaution. It’s a safety measure not part of the Milah.
    Even the Chidushei Harann, only says that as long as he did not do the Metzitza yet, he still did not ‘pull away his hands from the Milah’. No where does the Rann say that Metzitza might still be part of the actual Mitzvah.

  2. Don’t we have other instances where practices once thought safe have been replaced by yet safer practices? Conceivably, current societal conditions (more infections out there…) could make a previously safe practice less so now.
