It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rabbi Shaul Shlomo Shatzkes zt”l. He was 62 years old.

Rabbi Shatzkes was a respected talmid chochom and marbitz Torah who resided in Lakewood, NJ.

A descendant of the famed Rav Moshe Shatzkes zt”l, the Lomza Rov, Rabbi Shatzkes was a son of Rav Avrohom Aaron and Judith (Korb) Shatzkes. Rav Avrohom Aaron was a talmid chochom who served as a maggid shiur at Yeshivas Rabbeinu Yitzchok Elchonon in New York City.

Rabbi Shatzkes was a talented writer and disseminator of Torah, working, among other things, for ArtScroll/Mesorah on its Schottenstein Talmud. His Torah columns appeared in Yated Ne’eman and elsewhere.

Rabbi Shatzkes spent his years immersed in Torah, as evidenced by his wide range of knowledge in Gemara, halacha and other limudim. He carried himself with humility and simplicity, which belied his greatness as an oveid Hashem and a talmid chochom of note. He was the consummate oveid Hashem, and his passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of all who knew him.

Rabbi Shatzkes resided on East 8th Street in Lakewood, where he was a beloved mispallel of Rabbi Hertzberg’s shul.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mashy Shatzkes, beloved mechaneches at Bais Kaila High School, and their eleven children. Rabbi Shatzkes also leaves behind a brother, Rabbi Yechiel Shatzkes of Yerushalayim.

The levayah will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Bendheim (Yoshon) Bais Medrash of Bais Medrash Govoah, at 617 6th Street in Lakewood, NJ, followed by kevurah in Lakewood.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. Shocking. A great talmid chacham whose hasmadah and integrity in learning was matched by his extreme humility. As someone who has collaborated with him on various projects, all I can say is chaval al di’avdin velo mishtakchin. May he be a meilitz yosher for his dear family and all of Klal Yisrael.

  2. On this Holy day of Lag B’omer, the Yartzhei of Rashbi, we lost 3 pillars of Klal Yisroel; Torah, Avoda U’gemilas Chasadim!
HaRav Nochum Eisenstein, HaRav Shatkes, and HaRav Mendy Klein.
Each were gedolim in their own way, who’ve given endlessly to Klal Yisroel! What a tremendously sad day… May Hashem give strength to their choshuve families and to all of Klal Yisroel to whom they dedicated themselves to! Gevalt!

    • Thank you for expressing my sentiments exactly. The pain is great. There is something going on in Shomayim. May HKBH continue to have rachmanus on us and protect us.
