It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rabbi Yaakov Finkelstein zt”l. He was 98 years old.

Reb Yankel was one of the last links to the Torah world of Europe, where he was a talmid of the Mir Yeshiva in Shanghai. After settling in the United States, he used his success in the world of business to support mosdos haTorah across the continent.

Reb Yankel was a noted tomeich Torah and baal chesed, whose values and ideals were undiluted by the American culture. He remained a staunch and unwavering oveid Hashem throughout his life, clinging to the hashkafos with which he was raised and the lessons he learned from his illustrious rabbeim.

Reb Yankel always lived with pashtus, carrying himself with simplicity and eschewing the materialism rampant in the outside culture. He was a fascinating individual, who was a fount of information, anecdotes and stories about the gedolim he merited to form a kesher with and the world gone by in which he grew as a genuine ben Torah.

Reb Yankel lived for decades in the Kensington section of Brooklyn, NY. In his last years, he resided at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Rebbetzin Liba and Rav Dovid Magid, on Miller Road in Lakewood, NJ.

Reb Yankel is survived by his her children, R’ Reuven Finkelstein, R’ Nachum Finkelstein, R’ Velvel Finkelstein, R’ Shmuel Akiva Finkelstein, R’ Avrohom Finkelstein, Mrs. Zlaty Friedman and Rebbetzin Liba Magid.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mrs. Shaindel Finkelstein a”h.

The aron is being flown to Eretz Yisroel for a levayah and kevurah in Yerushalayim.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. Boruch Dayan Ho’Emes.

He was one of the individuals written about in one of Rav Dov Eliach shlit”a’s works on pre WWII European Yeshiva students, written in Hebrew, and later published in English as “Trails of Triumph”.
