It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rabbi Yehoshua Tzvi Hershkowitz z”l. He was 91.

Reb Yehoshua Tzvi, who was fondly known as “Jeno” to his friends, conceived of the idea of Tomche Shabbos, founding an organization by that name. His humble organization in Boro Park spawned the creation of dozens of similar groups by the same name, which has become synonymous with the giving of food and other necessities to the indigent and the unfortunate.

Reb Yehoshua Tzvi devoted his life to the cause, raising money under the radar, seeking no accolades for his legendary accomplishments. He never considered it beneath his dignity to do anything that was needed to be done, whether it was overseeing the distribution at the Tomche Shabbos headquarters, distributing boxes and vouchers, or knocking on doors to raise funds.

The levayah took place today at Tomche Shabbos headquarters in Boro Park, followed by kevurah in Deans, NJ.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. I wish I would have had the Merit to have seen him once, and known what he did… That would have cherished the ability to kiss his hand

  2. והלך לפניך צדקך
A person’s good deeds go in advance of him to the next world to guard him from harm, and to defend him before the Heavenly Court.
