rabbi-yonatan-sandler1Rabbi Yonatan Sandler z”l, who was killed today in the shooting in Toulouse, France, was born in Paris and spent his life learning Torah, teaching Torah and working in Jewish community outreach.

Rabbi Sandler was the father of two sons, Aryeh, aged six, and Gavriel, aged three, who were also killed in the attack.

Hashem yinkom domom.

Rabbi Sandler is survived by his wife and four-year-old daughter.

As a child, Rabbi Sandler was sent to school in Toulouse. He then learned at a yeshiva in Yerushalayim, where he lived for three years. Four-and-a-half years ago, he went back to France and got married, and then returned to Yerushalayim, where he lived in Kiryat Hayovel.

Rabbi Sandler learned at Kollel Zichron Shimon, preparing young French avreichim for a life of Torah and avodas hakodesh. Like others at the kollel, Rabbi Sandler went with his family last September to France, where they settled in Toulouse.

Rabbi Sandler was well known in France’s Jewish community for his column in a French Jewish newspaper. His column focused on outreach with secular Jews and hashkafah questions. Rabbi Sandler also performed outreach work with secular Jews as a volunteer for the Shoresh organization, which works in community outreach and kiruv.

R’ Aharon Getz, a friend of Rabbi Sandler, told Haaretz that Reb Yonatan was a “delightful person,” adding, “He had a wonderful connection with his fellow students and the communities in which he worked.”
