During a Chumash party at a cheder in Bayit Vegan, the rov of Bayit Vegan, Rav Ezriel Auerbach (son of Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach and son-in-law of Rav Yosef Sholom Elyashiv) and Rav Yehuda Adas slammed the Education Ministry’s Chareidi Department and accused it of weakening children’s yiros shomayim.
“We are in great danger today,” Rav Auerbach cried out. “There are persecutors and wicked people who seek all kinds of cunning ways to inculcate foreign attitudes into chadorim and talmudei Torah. We need to tell them that Hashem warned us, ‘Do not touch our anointed ones.’ We must guard our children. The posuk says, ‘Transgression crouches at the door.’ We must not open the door to those people who seek ways to cunningly introduce foreign programs which oppose the spirit of the Torah.”
Rav Adas gave an example of this trend.
“First they began with yeshivos and kollelim,” he said. “Now they realize that if there are no kids there’ll be no goats and want to penetrate the chinuch of chadorim and kindergartens for three-year-olds. How is this seen? I will tell you facts we saw on the ground. The Kol Yaakov institutions have six talmudei Torah in Israel with three thousand pupils. An inspector came to one of our kindergartens and asked the kindergarten teacher, ‘Why is there a poster on the wall writing what Hashem created on the first day and the second day? Remove it from the kindergarten. These things are too abstract for a child to understand. Hang up the kids’ handicrafts instead.’
“…We see that the maskilim want to uproot emunah. The Rambam writes in Moreh Nevuchim that it is forbidden to draw a depiction of Hashem, as it were, even for a small child, for we must teach a child the foundations of emunah even at a young age.
“We have spent two thousand years in exile since the Bais Hamikdash was destroyed and have not yet faced such a difficult trial,” he concluded.
