Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel fell short of capturing the 50 percent majority needed to win Tuesday’s municipal election, signaling a major blow and forcing the incumbent into an April runoff against Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia.

According to unofficial returns with 83.7 of the precincts reporting, Emanuel had 45.5 percent over Garcia’s 33.9 percent.

The former White House chief of staff and Garcia captured more than their three challengers, businessman Willie Wilson, 2nd Ward Ald. Bob Fioretti and perpetual candidate William “Dock” Walls. The top two candidates will campaign for six more weeks until the April 7 runoff. Read more at the Chicago Tribune.
