Cuban President Raul Castro said Wednesday that the U.S. must return the military base at Guantanamo Bay before the two nations can move forward with renewing relations.

Speaking to a summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, Castro said that the two countries needed to resolve longstanding issues including the U.S. lifting a 50-year-old trade embargo on Cuba as well as compensating the nation for damages.

President Obama has eased the trade embargo with measures designed to improve economic ties with Cuba. While Castro acknowledged he is working with Obama on negotiations, he said, “if these problems aren’t resolved, this diplomatic rapprochement wouldn’t make any sense.”

Castro added that while diplomatic ties may be restored between Cuba and the U.S., normal relations depend on concessions such as ending the transmission of anti-Castro radio and televesion broadcasts and giving “just compensation to our people for the human and economic damage” that they suffered.

The U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on his speech. Read more.

  1. Woth the current administration he has a chance! It may happen! I could just hear his news conference! I’m issuing an executive order that this country pay $500 billion in reparations to the Cuban people. We hurt them. I didn’t; it was all previous administrations. But it’s wrong so I ordered the treasury to write out that check snd I will personally deliver to President Castro. I believe it’s the right thing to do and I’m empowered by the American people to make that decision. They gave me the mandate!
    bla, bla, bla.

  2. I guess the other shoe just dropped. “Concessions, compensations”. Yeah, how about compensating all those Cubans that suffered all these years?

  3. Look, Raul Castro and Fidel Castro are Obama’s people! Obama places the Castros and likes of the mullahs in Iran on a much higher pedestal than he does Netanyahu, that’s for sure!!

  4. How about the compensation that Cuba owes to all those Cubans who had to flee with the clothes on their backs and all they had left behind, millions and millions of dollars of assets. I am waiting to hear what Cuba has to say to that since we now have this friendly atmosphere. What a joke.
