rabbi-shlomo-amarFormer Rishon L’Tzion Rav Shlomo Amar has submitted his candidacy to be Sefardic Chief Rabbi of Yerushalayim.

The announcement comes after months of speculation about whether Rav Amar would join the race.

He submitted his candidacy one day before Tuesday’s deadline.

If Shas submits its own candidate for the position to challenge Rav Amar, the likely candidate would be Rav David Yosef, a member of the Moetzet Chachmei Hatorah of Shas and son of Chacham Ovadia Yosef zt”l.

Rav Amar said that his goal is “to bring people closer” to Yiddishkeit and to spread the Torah “through ways of pleasantness to all Jews according to our traditions transmitted to us throughout the doros.”

The leading candidate for the position of Ashkenazi chief rabbi is Rav Aryeh Stern.

  1. No better possible candidate. A true Yirae Shomayim and a Gaon and Ba’al Horoah. He has given everyone, religious and not-yet religious, the greatest respect. He instituted that every Israeli institution (school, hospital, prison, etc.) use Geush-Katif bug free vegetables. The list of his accomplishments is endless. He will ultimately be seen as the world successor leading Sephardic Jewry.
