rabbi-shlomo-amarIsraeli Sephardic Chief Rabbi Rav Shlomo Amar spoke out yesterday, on Shabbos Kodesh, regarding the proposal to require enlistment of charedim in the IDF, calling it “work of the devil.”

In a drasha at the shul of Chacham Ovadia Yosef in Har Nof, Yerushalayim, Rav Amar remarked that “limud hatorah is enjoying days of glory the likes of which we haven’t witnessed for doros. The devil viewed that with an envious eye and got in into the minds of certain people to wage war on the Torah.”

“This nonsense is unheard of,” Rav Amar was quoted by Yediot Achronot as saying. “It is as though our society is free of poverty and incest and other ills. Everyone is equal and we’re the last outstanding problem, as if Israel has no enemies and is at peace with all. There’s only one enemy left, the yeshivot. This is sheer madness.

“For the sins of multitudes, folly entered the minds of the few. It is the work of the devil. Our salvation is wholly dependent on the Torah. The devil instilled in their minds the folly that putting an end to the yeshivot will rid them of economic or security problems. Turning the yeshiva students into enemies, chas vechalilah. They protect us, their Torah safeguards us all.”

  1. To Guest2:

The charedi world in EY is focusing on the draft, kevarim digging, and welfare cuts.

The real issue is being avoided — abject poverty which is rampant.

Many charedim want to work and earn an honest living, but the entire system is built against them.
