  1. I had the zechus to know Rav Tennenbaum for over 15 years. We spoke weekly and every trip to Israel I was fortunate to meet with him and his wife and sometimes his children. Many trips to Israel we traversed the country side visiting Gedolim and major Historical sites and to pray at kevorim throughout the country. Yet, the most memorable part of my relationship was his transparent love for all of Klal Yisrael. We stood at opposite ends of the haskafic religious spectrum on views of the Army and most important social issues like Charedi participation in the army and the need for young Avreichem to get a broad secular education but despite these differences Rav Asher (how I affectionately called him) gave unconditional friendship and love. Rav Asher’s home was a revolving door always open and full of chesed and talmud torah.
When we spoke Rav ASher would ask about each one of my family and friends, we would discuss how my business was going and how his children were doing. He taught me that love for all Jews stood above all else. I don’t believe over the years i missed more than a dozen weeks that we didn’t speak over the phone even if was for a brief moment to sing on erev shabbos Shalom aleichem and say to each other Hodu Lahashem Ki tov. Rav Asher Tennenbam embodied the ultimate character of Tzelem Elokim. Rav Asher had an element of aristocratic elegance and a demeanor that demanded everyone who met him to give him kovod but all I saw was, him giving everyone else kovod. He would insist on serving me when i visited and insisted to walk me down three flights of stars when ever i visited. It was a challenge in my last visits when He was very ill to make excuses why the Rav shouldnt walk me down the stairs. Sometimes arguing for many minutes to win him over. Rav Asher was most importantly a devoted Husband. To watch the Rebbetzin and him was a zechus. True devotion and love. Rav Asher’s pride and love and commitment to his family was unparalleled. This morning when I spoke with a family member we reflected on his great insight and wisdom in listening and giving advice to all. Rav Asher had the great gift to know what to say to everyone and direct everyone in the right path.
I will share one of many beautiful memories i cherish from our trips. Many years ago we took a trip to the north, on Rosh CHodesh and Rav ASher wanted to take my friend and I to visit Rav Abuchazera. We were told that Rav Abuchatzera does not see anyone of Rosh Chodeesh. We were about to leave and the gabbai comes after us that we should go to Rav Abuchatzeras apartment. When we got to the apartment Rav Abuchazera apologized for keeping us and then began to serve us each a feast. When we were about to leave Rav Abuchatzera walked us to the car and like yesterday I remember Rav Abuchazera telling me that we were in the presence of a great Tzaddik-referring to Rav Asher Tennenbaum.
Rav ASher Tennenbaum’s passing is a great loss to Klal Yisrael but if my years of friendship taught me anything, I would say his legacy is Talmud Torah, Emunah and Betuchan in Hadoesh Baruchhu. That with Ahava (love) for klal Yisrael and devotion to Hakoesh Baruchhu we will be able to deal with his loss and give him the great honor he deserves.
