shmuel-auerbach-19A large crowd of bnei Torah and others, including talmidim of Rav Shmuel Auerbach, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Maalos Hatorah and Shaar Hashomayim, gathered last night for a large asifa at the Tamir hall in Yerushalayim in light of the draft law being formed in Knesset aimed at removing talmidei hayeshiva from between the koslei bais hamedrash and having them participate in Israeli army service.

As reported by Matzav.com Israel on Friday, a bochur who refused to enlist was jailed at Prison 6, just the latest case of a ben Torah being used as an example by the government to show it is serious about the draft law.

At last night’s asifa, Rav Auerbach delivered a passionate drashah, telling the attendees to continue to battle against the conscription law, without compromise.

“Any rights to live in Eretz Yisroel are due to the Torah learning that takes place in it,” said Rav Auerbach, “and when they badger and harass those who learn Torah, they relinquish their rights to be here. Do not surrender to them.”

Rav Auerbach added: “We will fight until the death for our rights.”

Last week, Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu said, “I won’t be a part of sending Jews to jail for studying Torah,” but it is not clear if that was merely a neat sounding sound bite or something substantial, taking into consideration the bochurim who have already been jailed and the promises emerging from the likes of Yesh Atid party members that prison will be a genuine option for the government to utilize against those who don’t capitulate.

Rav Shmuel Deutsch also addressed last night’s gathering.

“We may need to sacrifice ourselves. There may be casualties. We are required to fight till the end,” said Rav Deutsch.

Meanwhile, the charedi press has joined the outcry.

The Israeli Yated Ne’eman stated that “the faithful of Judaism will not rest or be silenced and their outcry will shake the entire Jewish world.” The paper quoted Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman as saying that “we do not know what is worse, criminal or financial sanctions, but criminal action is blasphemous.”

Hamevasser reported internal deliberations on how to react if the bill passes the Knesset and is enforced, labeling the law a “declaration of war by the Likud, headed by Netanyahu in tandem with Habayit Hayehudi and Yesh Atid, who had the gall to vote in favor of criminal sanctions and decided to punish Torah students as criminals.”

Tomorrow, a historic meeting is expected to take place between the Moetzet Chachmei Hatorah of Shas and the two Moetzes of Agudas Yisroel and Degel Hatorah.

The Shaked committee meanwhile is scaling up talks in order to finalize the draft law before a March 10 deadline, when the Knesset goes on spring recess.

  1. it is possible that while Maran Ovadyah Yosef was alive Bibi and company were afraid due to the respect for the Maran ZT’L;however at present with apparently presuming no fear or concern for a Religious Authority THEY appear to be out to do whatever THEY feel necessary.

    Ben Gurion seemed more respectful.
