It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Avrohom Kahaneman zt”l, longtime nosi of the Ponovezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak and son of the Ponovezher Rov. He was 97. Rav Kahaneman learned in his youth in the Mirrer Yeshiva in the town of Mir, Poland, under Rav Leizer Yudel Finkel zt”l, and his acumen and tremendous kishron were recognized already at a young age. He maintained a close relationship with Rav Leizer Yudel, who was his rebbi muvhak.
Rav Kahaneman traveled to Eretz Yisroel in 1930 and continued learned under Rav Leizer Yudel in the newly transplanted Mirrer Yeshiva in Yerushalayim. When the Ponovezher Yeshiva opened about four years later, Rav Kahaneman went to Bnei Brak to help his legendary father, the Ponovezher Rov, Rav Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman zt”l, in re-establishing the yeshiva in Eretz Yisroel.
Two years later, at the age of 30, he married his wife, Rebbetzin Rivkah, daughter of Rav Knoller, rosh hakahal in Berlin. Rav Kanhaneman then went to the United States to raise funds for the Ponovezher Yeshiva and assist his father. He would travel to Eretz Yisroel and spend several months there, delivering shiurim at the yeshiva. During his time in chutz la’aretz, Rav Kahaneman would travel to tens of locations all over the globe, being mechazek Yidden and imbuing them with a love of Torah and mitzvos, and love of Hashem.
During the last few years, Rav Kahaneman retired from his position as nosi of the Ponovezher Yeshiva, after devoting decades to sustaining and maintaining this makom Torah. He was niftar at the Maayanei Hayeshuah Hospital this evening.
He is survived by his son, Rav Eliezer Kahaneman, nosi of the Ponovezher Yeshiva, and his daughter, Rebbetzin Tziporah Markowitz, wife of Rav S. Markowitz, rosh yeshiva in Ponovezh and son of Rav Tzvi Markowitz zt”l.
The levaya will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, at the Ponovezher Yeshiva in Bnei Brak.
