porush-levaya-small1Yesterday, amidst speculation in various circles and amongst the Olam Hayeshivos, it was confirmed that Rav Avrohom Yehoshuah Soloveitchik, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Brisk, did attend the levaya for Rav Menachem Porush, the former Knesset member and noted askan for Klal Yisroel. Rav Soloveitcheik can be seen in the adjacent photo from HNN.co.il. The levaya left from the Agudas Yisroel building on Rechov Press, across from Yeshivas Brisk.

Also noteworthy is that Rav Porush’s levaya was reported on the front page of today’s Wall Street Journal, the largest circulation newspaper in the United States.

porush-levaya3The Journal featured a large photo of a crowd at the levaya in the center of its front page, with a heading stating, “Thouasands Mourn Powerful Ultra-Orthodox Leader,” and a caption stating, Grief in Jerusalem: Jews carry the body of Rabbi menachem Porush, leader of one of the strongest ultra-Orthodox parties in Israel’s parliament, at his funeral Monday. He died of an apparent heart attack at 93.”

  1. Other than stam hock, the significance of R’ A.Y.S. attendance and the WSJ report are equivalent.

    Time to grow up.

    Boruch Dayan Ha’emes.

  2. I am sure the Rav Solovetchik had no second thoughts of attending, just because someone has a different hashkafah, it doesn’t reduce the fact that he is a talmid chachom with all the rights and privelages it deserves.

  3. Everyone who is familiar with the hanhagos of Beis Brisk knows that Briskers go to every levayah that they might be accused of avoiding.
It’s just one of the things they do.

  4. I think its fair to say that rabbi a.y. solvechick shlita being present at the livaya is gadlus considering his brisker style
I wonder what he said in his thursday night shiur
I assume he was present at the livaya mostly because he was a neighbor

  5. #6 Who Cares?

I care and all Torah Jewry should care when a gadol departs this world! Also we should care when one of the greatest gadolim in this world attends the levaya. Especially when this person has shaped the yeshiva world more then any other family in the past 100 years! And if you dont know who I am talking about then LEARN!

  6. Dear Kish ka-
I think you may be mistaken. If I am correct Rabbi AYS is not the son of Rabbi Solvetchik from YU. In fact I once heard that there were some differences in the two’s Hashkafos. Can someone pleas clarify if this Rabbi Solevechik shared the same viewpoints as the Rav from YU?

  7. Dear yerushalmi kugel,
Your questions are clear and penetrating. They are like music to the ears. The differences in hashkafa between the 2 branches of the Soleveichik family are small, and mostly have to do with the niggun used for lecha dodi.

  8. He is a scion of the Brisker dynasty in EY. A son of Rav Yoshe Ber of Yerushalayim, Rosh yeshivas brisk, and grandson of Rav Velvele, the Brosker Rov.

  9. Why and to who does it matter if Rav S. attended the levaya or not? The real question should be, did Mercaz Harav or Ger send any representatives?

  10. To the discerning eye, this is clearly NOT Harav Hagaon Rav Avrohom Yehoshua. Can’t you see that he was PHOTOSHOPPED in? Another myth perpetrated by the TZIOINIM.

  11. I want to shtel avek that there is no Shitas Beis Brisk, that is, the Brisker Rov , R’Velvel , niftar 1959, operated very differently than his father, R’ Chaim, and his grandfather the Beis Halevi.

  12. rebbe reb tzutz – the Beis Halevi may have become the Rov of Brisk, but he was definitely not a brisker. That began with R. Chaim.
