Rav Chaim Kanievsky often advises people to learn a Gemara relevant to what they are suffering from. He may advise someone with a malignant growth to learn Bechoros, which discusses many different diseases; someone with foot problems to study perek Keitzad Haregel of Bava Kama; or someone who cannot find his beshert to learn Kiddushin.

“Everything that makes a person learn more Torah is itself a segulah to save him, because Hashem wants man to come closer to him,” Rav Chaim explained. “A person who needs deliverance is more willing to accept things. So I advise him to learn something and, with Hashem’s help, it’s effective.”

Recently, Rav Chaim was visited by someone suffering from severe headaches. He advised him to learn the Rosh’s commentary on Shas.

  1. This story is cut off in the middle. There is more to the story. When asked why he chose the Rosh, Reb Chaim said he realized the person did not learn at all. But he didn’t want to make him feel bad. So he told him to learn the Rosh. The man asked Reb Chaim on which meaechta? Reb Chaim said on whatever mesechta you are learning….. B’kitzur, he made the fellow realize he needed to start learning a mesechta bekvius.
