rav-chaim-kanievskyRav Chaim Kanievsky is said to have dreamt of the petirah of his daughter, Rebbetzin Chana Shteinman a”h, who passed away this morning following an illness.

Last night, Rav Chaim woke up at 1:30 a.m. and he told members of his household that had dreamt that his daughter who was ill had passed away and that he would be sitting shivah. His family members tried to comfort him, stating that all dreams have components that are not true or sheer silliness. Rav Chaim was apparently not satisfied.

As a result, this morning, during Shacharis, which he davened kevosikin at his home on Rechov Rashbam, he performed hatovas chalom during Birkas Kohanim.

This took place prior to Rav Chaim learning of his daughter’s worsening condition. He was ultimately apprised of her deteriorating state and he immediately traveled to Yerushalayim to daven at the Kosel. A short while later, he was told of the petirah and he tore kriah at the home of his grandson in Yerushalayim before returning to Bnei Brak for the levaya.

This incident was related at the levaya by his son, Rav Yitzchok Saul Kanievsky.

  1. B’DE.

I had a ChaBaD rabbi tell me very explicitly once that dreams are NOT HASHEMs method and that G-d does not in any way talk to us in dreams. He said that is what “Talmud says”.

Still, I bless that fact that Hashem gives us dreams and visions. If you are so blessed, Torah can guide you by its blessed vision.

    Very interesting story.

  2. it says in seforim that a dream is 1/70th of a prophecy

(i.e. it would take 70 dreams to equal the same as getting a message from Hashem that hashem gave our neviim)

  3. to number one:
Look in Rashi where it talks about methods of nevuah (ruach hakodesh)dreams are discussed. also, if there is not validity to dreams than why would there be something called hatavos chalom. maybe you misunderstood.

  4. Rav Chaim Kanievsky shlit”a, is the one of the gedolei hador.

It is like a kindergarten teacher saying that Albert Einstein is wrong. If you want to follow the kindergarten teacher, that is your choice, but don’t tell us that you know better than Rav Chaim!

  5. Your Chabad rabbi is correct. There probably have been many crazies he has encountered in his years that have had “dreams”. In addition, dreams , for the average person are just a conglomeration if their subconscious thoughts. Thus the Germara says that people don`t dream about an Elephant walking through the eye on a needle. This is also why we say in HaMapil Hihurim Rahim next to Chalomos Rahim.

A tzadik such a Rav Chaim is different and I am sure your Chabad rabbi would agree.
