rav-chaim-kanievskyIn the zechus of [shemiras] Shabbos and kashrus, El Al has extra protection and siyata dishmaya.

That statement was made by Rav Chaim Kanievsky to EL Al’s CEO, Major General Eliezer Shkedi, who visited Rav Chaim at his home on Rechov Rashbam in Bnei Brak.

Rav Chaim discussed various halachos of Shabbos and kashrus that are relevant to the airline.

During the conversation, which lasted about twenty minutes, Rav Chaim said that there is no doubt that there is a preference for every Jew, and a shomrei Shabbos in particular, to use EL AL over another airline. “El Al [maintains] kashrus and shemiras Shabbos, and thus, those who fly on EL AL have extra protection and siyata diShmaya.”

Shkedi told Rav Chaim that El Al is proud of its Jewish identity and is the only airline in the world that can boast of that. The CEO added that he anticipates that chareidi travelers will give EL Al preference over any other airline.

In recent years, a number of alternatives to EL Al, flying to and from Israel, have been established.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Rav Chaim wished Shkedi “bracha v’hatzlacha”  and bentched EL AL with “much success in all that they do” in the zechus of “all the  great and important things you do about keeping kashrus and Shabbos.”
Shkedi was accompanied by EL Al deputy director David Maimon and El Al Chairman Mr. Tammy Moses-Borovitz, and they were welcomed by Rebbetzin Batsheva Kanievsky upon arriving at Rav Chaim’s home.

  1. Every child knows that El Al is full of Chillul Shabbos in many different ways , it’s hard to believe that Rav Kanievsky was never made aware of the various chillul shabbos that goes on at El Al .

  2. Comment #2 from “probably”: Of course, you can try to ask Maran Rav Chaim Kanievsky about this point.

However, I think that Rav Chaim was probably just referring to the GENERAL Shabbos observance that El Al does in that it does not have any flights going during the time of Shabbos.

For the airline to do this is a tremendous Mesiras Nefesh, for, as it is well known, Friday evening and Saturday are key peak times of travel.

And as the airline does do this, is a tremendous Kiddush HaShem: the official airline of the Jewish country of Israel does not have flights on the Jewish holy times of Shabbos and Yom Tov.

Now, as you pointed out, very unfortunately, probably most of the employees at El Al are Tinokes Shenishbas – people who were raised far away from the ways of our Torah and thus have little idea of Shabbos and many other Mitzvos of the Torah. Thus, in their private homes on Shabbos and Yom Tov, there is very little observance of the sacred times. And it could well be that many of them actually do do work at their offices and airport facilities on Shabbos and Yom Tov. Like all Jews, we certainly have to try to bring them in to the ways of our Torah.

Rav Chaim, as I said at the beginning of this remark, is probably praising El Al for its general Shabbos observance of not having flights then.

  3. Comment #2: PROBABLY – the Rav DOES know what goes on at El Al and has made his decision regardless, as he knows this is the better of two evils. There are MANY Jewish jobs at stake (including Shomer Shabbos employees) – I would take a guess and suggest that retrenchment was probably one of the things that he was explained by the head of EL AL at the meeting.

Perhaps his heart is reeling from the sheer volume of poverty stricken Yidden in Israel and can’t bear the thought of many more coming to him who used to work for El Al….

  4. In regards to the comment made by PROBABLY.

Perhaps u can enlighten us “”infants”” because we don’t know!!
Did it ever occur to u that R’ Chaim is aware of whatever u are aware and then some!!Perhaps he chose the Derech of Mishlei 9:8 rebuke the Chacham and he will love u!! .. ..

  5. 1. El Al is Mechalel Shabbos
    2. Its not mesiras nefesh, they are doing it for Business.
    3. Where do we see the extra siyata Dishmaya. Why? did you hear something happening with other airlines? Does the scrambled eggs in the morning taste less Guchy with El Al?

  6. I’m sure Rav Kanievsky shlit”a knows exactly whats going on. Once you get up to his lever, you get to debate him on the issues. He knows more than probably most people put together.

  7. COMPLETE LOSHON HORAH, I CANT BELIEVE PPL HAVE THE AUDACITY TO SLANDER A COMPANY IN PUBLIC LIKE THAT, DO YOU PPL KNOW THAT WHEN YOU (HOPEFULLY) SAY 3 TIMES A DAY “V’LAMALSHINIM AL T’HI SIKVA” YOU ARE REFERRING TO YOURSELVES?!?!? SO PERHAPS SITUATIONS GO ON THERE, OR EMPLOYEES ARE NOT FRUM, BUT THE CEO IS TRYING!! AND YOU “ALTEH ZAIDE” WHO THROW WHAT HE IS DOING AWAY WITH SUCH OFFHANDEDNESS IS UTTERLY DISGUSTING. I THINK YOU MADE A BIG MISTAKE AND YOU TOO, #2, AND YOU SHOULD BOTH TAKE STEPS TO RECTIFY IT, AND TO NEVER BASH OTHER PPL AGAIN. “DIRACHEHA DARCHEI NOAM, V’CHOL NESIVOSEHA SHALOM”!!!

  8. As usual, a casual conversation between a godol and a pilot turns into a big deal. This is not a Rashi fellas, don’t dissect every word. If you don’t want to fly El Al because they are mechalel shabbos, don’t . I then expect you not to use Citibank or any other bank, because their CEOs and Vice Presidents are often Jewish, and are extremely likely to violate shabbos with business matters. Oh, once we’re at it, stop buying in department stores, it’s probably the same there. New York City has a Jewish mayor, so by living there you are encouraging chilul shabbos by the mayor. In summary, you’re hypocrites.

  9. All sounds great, BUT.. Just one problem, ELAL is NOT shomer Shabbos.. dont let them fool you.. they fly to turkey under a diferent name (i forgot what it’s called-but the are owned by ELAL) ON Shabbos, just as long as the plane dosent say the word ELAL.

  10. I’m surprised at the amount of “insiders” and shocked at the pure chutzpah of those who woul dare say something to contradict one of our Gedolim.
