Rav Chaim Kanievsky: Lottery Not the Answer for Tzedakos

Thursday July 9, 2009 10:18 AM - One Comment

rav-chaim-kanievskyDuring a consultation with Rav Chaim Kanievsky recently about financial problems, a member of the Kupat Ha’ir tzedaka fund said in jest that Rav Chaim should either reveal lottery numbers to them  - for a 50 million shekel prize - or daven that the ticket they purchase should be the winning one.

Rav Kanievsky responded, “Even if I could tell, I wouldn’t. The Jewish nation has survived because of the merit of giving. If the money would come in the form of the lottery, the Jewish nation would lose out on the many merits of the mitzvah of tzedaka.”
