People who have visited Rav Chaim Kanievsky this week, including those who have discussed the terrible tragedies that have recently afflicted Klal Yisroel, relate that Rav Chaim has remarked, “Tichleh shanah vekileloseha – May this year finally end, and with it, all of its curses,” which is traditionally said to people Rosh Hashanah time.

Petitioners did not understand the meaning of Rav Chaim’s comment and asked: “We are in the month of Adar, not Elul, which is the month before the actual new year, so why the comment of ‘Tichleh shanah vekileloseha’?

Rav Chaim responded that “it is known in the name of [my uncle] the Chazon Ish zt”l that at the end of the year, Heaven acts in the same way as earthy beings, so to speak, finishing the accounts of the past year, so since the month of Nissan is the first month of the year, even here, during Adar, there is a concept of tichleh shanah vekileloseha, that the year, and its curses, should end.

“But,” stressed Rav Chaim, “of course, everything depends on tefillah.”
