This past week, a noted rosh kollel visited the home of Rav Chaim Kanievsky for a bracha. He was set to fly the next day to chutz laaretz to raise money abroad and sought the blessings of Rav Chaim.

When Rav Chaim heard that he would be traveling abroad, Rav Chaim responded immediately, “Why travel to chutz la’aretz?”

The rosh kollel could not understand why he received this reply, and what was more perplexing was that a few minutes before, the head of a different mosad told Rav Chaim that he’d be traveling abroad and Rav Chaim wished him “bracha v’hatzlacha.”

The rosh kollel told Rav Chaim that he has large debts and must go to raise funds for the avreichim in his institution. Rav Chaim replied: “Go to Tzefas.”

The rosh kollel exited the room and met a friend, with whom he shared Rav Chaim’s comments. The friend went to Rav Chaim and told him that the rosh kollel owes a lot of money. Rav Chaim said, “If he wants to go [to chutz la’aretz], go, but I give a bracha for the trip to Tzefas.”

The rosh kollel canceled his flight and went to Tzefas. That Sunday evening, he went to the Sanzer shul in Tzefas to learn. While sitting there, he put his head down on the table to rest. At 10 p.m., he woke up and asked someone when the next Maariv minyan is. He was told that he’d have to wait until 11 p.m.

During Maariv, he noticed the presence of a certain wealthy American Jew. After davening, he decided to approach him and try his luck. The rosh kollel told the baal tzedakah what Rav Chaim had said. The American asked, ‘How much money do you need?” The rosh kollel told him that he’d get back to him with an exact amount. The next day, the rosh kollel met with the baal tzedakah, who handed him two checks in the amount required.

When Rav Chaim was told was happened, he replied, “One who hears and believes will be helped by Hashem.”

  1. This is an unbelievable story. Pshat over here, is that he listened to Daas torah. That was the zchus. Rav Chaim should be maarich yomim vishanim.

  2. This is the best mussar I’ve read in ages. Alone it could inspire a whole sefer. I really appreciate how matzav shares so much information about him. Amazing to think how we can still glimpse the edge of shiur-qomah and not be m’balbel by the shtiyus from Efrat, Riverdale, Heappoo U and Standford.

  3. Your headline reads: “Rav Chaim Kanievsky’s Miracle?” What’s the purpose of the question mark? Is it to imply that maybe the story is not true? Or maybe you mean to say: “Is it really in the zechus of Rav Chaim?” Or even worse, are you asking, “Does Rav Chaim really have ruach hakodesh?” Anyway you look at it, it would be better to take out the question mark from the title.
