rav-dov-schwartzman-1It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Dov Schwartzman zt”l, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Bais Hatalmud in Sanhedria Murchevet in Yerushalayim. Rav Schwartzman was a founder of the Yeshiva of Philadelphia together with Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky. In 1955, he opened his own yeshiva in Yerushalayim.

Rav Schwartzman was born 90 years ago to his parents, Rav and Rebbetzin Yehoshua Zev Schwartzman. He learned at the Chevron Yeshiva and later married a daughter of Rav Aharon Kotler zt”l, rosh yeshiva of Bais Medrash Govoha in Lakewood.

Rav Schwartzman’s children are Rav Yaakov Eliezer, the eldest grandson of Rav Aharon Kotler, who presently serves as rosh yeshiva of Bais Medrash Govoah/Lakewood East in Yerushalayim; Rav Zevulun Schwartzman, rosh kollel of Yeshivas Eitz Chaim; Rav Isser Zalman Schwartzman, R”M at Yeshiva Knesses Yitzchok in Modiin Illit; Rebbetzin Shalvah Olshin, wife of Rav Yeruchem Olshin, rosh yeshiva of Bais Medrash Govoha of Lakewood, NJ; and Rebbetzin Eta Neuman, wife of Rav Yisroel Neuman, rosh yeshiva of Bais Medrash Govoha of Lakewood, NJ; and Rebbetzin Miriam Jurkanski, wife of Rav Avrohom Jukanski, senior rosh chaburah at Bais Medrash Govoha in Lakewood, NJ.

Rav Schwartzman also leaves behind his second wife and six children, including one son, Rav Yitzchok Schwartzman.

Rav Schwartzman spent his life devoted to harbotzas haTorah, influencing hundreds of talmidim, many of whom received semichah from him and went on to become rabbonim and marbitzei Torah themselves. He was renowned as a gaon in Torah, possessing remarkable depth and breadth of yedios haTorah, having spent his life immersed in limud haTorah.

The rosh yeshiva was niftar early this morning. The levaya is slated to be held at Yeshivas Bais Hatalmud in Sanhedria Murchevet.

Kevurah will take place on Har Hazeisim.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. He was a goan – it was said of him he knew a tremendous amount in Nigleh, and that was nothing compared to what he knew in Nistar. Yehi Zicro Boruch

  2. Baruch Dayan HaEmes.
He was a Gaon in learning and a Gadol in menchlechkeit. A basar v’dam whose head was always in the oilamos haelyoinim, but whose feet were firmly on the ground in this world.

  3. Seeing R Dov zt”l one was privileged to gaze
At a major goan of former generation caliber who on the one hand was a boki b’iyun in kol hatorah kula nigle nistar machshova; who had the caring and ahavas yisroel to be involved with beginners as well as major lomdim. His big dmus will serve as a major inspiration to those that had the zechus to know him

  4. May the family of HaRav Dov Schwartzman, z’t’l, be comforted among the mourners of Tzion and Yerushalayim. Hashem is taking so many of our tzadikim lately; may they all intercede (be meilitzim yosher) for Klal Yisroel.
