gershon-edelstein-7As the global Torah world remains gripped by the medical condition of the posek hador, Maran Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, who remains hospitalized in serious condition at Shaarei Tzedek Medical Center in Yerushalayim, Rav Gershon Edelstein, rosh yeshiva of Ponovezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak, has stressed the importance of davening and learning as a zechus for the gadol hador.

“If Rav Elyashiv in danger,” said Rav Edelstein, “we are all in danger.”

In his morning shiur, Rav Edelstein linked Rav Elyashiv’s condition to the security situation in Eretz Yisroel, stating that Rav Elyashiv protects us.

“We are in danger and need protection and are in grave danger… We are a lonely sheep among seventy hungry wolves. In such a situation, we need protection. ”

The rosh yeshiva then described Rav Elyashiv as protecting the generation.

“His guf is botul to his neshamah,” said Rav Edelstein, describing Rav Elyashiv complete and utter devotion to limud haTorah and avodas Hashem.

Later, the rosh yeshiva described how the power of the righteous can prevent wars and catastrophes, adding that it is known that before World War II, many gedolim, including Rav Boruch Ber Leibowitz, Rav Shimon Shkop and others,  perished, thus removing these “righteous defenders” from the world.

“Now in our generation, we have an individual who defends us through his toil in Torah,” said Rav Edelstein. “Now he’s sick and we are compromised. We must all daven and learn Torah.”

All are asked to daven for Rav Yosef Shalom ben Chaya Musha.

  1. Perhaps it is my mistake, but this article gives me the impression that we should daven for Rav Elyashiv’s health so that we will be protected.
I think that is very selfish, as if we should daven for the Rav’s health for our own sakes. If that were the case, it might be prudent for us to daven for protection. And if we are so selfish, we need to daven.
Rather, we have benefitted from Rav Elyashiv all these years, not just in a mystical sense, but through his wise counsel and halachic decisions. Therefore, we owe him tremendous Hakaras HaTov. If we, as a community, have any pull in Heaven, we ought to pull out all stops and exercise it to save our leader, merely as a gesture of thanks for all he has done for us all these years.
