Rav Elyashiv Not Informed of Rebbetzin Kanievsky’s Petirah

rav-yosef-shalom-elyashivFollowing the petirah of Rebbetzin Batsheva Kanievsky a”h on Shabbos, family members struggled with the decision of whether or not to inform the Rebbetzin’s father, Maran Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashivshlit”a. Following consultation with Rav Yitzchok Zilberstein and Rav Ezriel Auerbach, sons-in-law of Rav Elyashiv, it was decided that, due to his weakened condition and recent health troubles, the news should not be shared with Rav Elyashiv, possibly not until after Yom Tov.

The centenarian Rav Elyashiv, has tragically experienced in his lifetime the passing of his own wife, a daughter of Rav Aryeh Levin zt”l, as well as his daughters, Rebbetzin Zilberstein, Rebbetzin Berlin, Rebbetzin Auerbach and now Rebbetzin Kanievsky, and his son-in-law, Rav Yosef Yisroelson zt”l.

  1. I never knew he lost three daughters before. Very tragic. He has gone through so much in his life. May he himself have a refua shlaymma

  2. what a high level of tzidkus & bitachon he must be on. & to get to such a high level… takes decades.

as we all know if someone couldn’t pass a test from Hashem then Hashem wouldn’t give him the nisayon.

May the Tzaddik return to full health & always remain healthy

  3. yehuda, there is no mekor for this long-standing saying “G-d will not give a nisayon that you can’t pass. Think about it. Many people over the years have had nisyonos they couldn’t pass. it’s an insensitive thing to say to someone dealing with a tragedy. In short, it’s neither true nor helpful

  4. hilchot aveilut over yom tov is the requirement to be besimcha in the face of loss……due to Maran’s delicate health it makes much sense to not increase the burden upon him to be besimcha on the chag and have knowledge of the loss and therfore strain to retain the frame of mind and spirit of the simchat yom tov and thus best to not be told of the passing of the rebbitzen at that time….Ribbono Shel Olam give solace as only You can
