rav-elyashiv[Photos below.] Just two days after undergoing successful cataract surgery, the posek hador, Maran Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv lost consciousness this morning after he fainted. At approximately 8:35 IL this morning, United Hatzolah was summoned to Rav Elyashiv’s home at Rechov Chanan 10 in Meah Shearim.

Paramedics found Rav Elyashiv unconscious. After approximately one minute of rescusitation efforts, Rav Elyashiv regained consciousness, boruch Hashem.

A Magen Dovid Adom mobile intensive care unit had been stationed at Rechov Shivtei Yisroel and Meah Shearim and arrived within a couple of minutes. Dr. Gavriel Montar, Rav Elyashiv’s physician, felt it would be best to treat the gadol in his home, rather than have him transported to the hospital. Transporting the centenarian gadol is arduous, and it is more prudent for him to remain in his home, the doctor felt.

Rav Elyashiv’s 15-minutes cataract surgery took place on Wednesday at Shaarei Tzedek Medical Center in Yerushalayim. The procedure was done under local anesthesia.

Back in June, Rav Elyashiv underwent successful surgery to repair a coronary artery near his heart. That surgery was performed at Shaarei Tzedek by Dr. Daniel Clair, Chairman of the Department of Vascular Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, who made the 5,700-mile trip to perform the procedure on Rav Elyashiv.

All are asked to continue davening for Rav Yosef Shalom ben Chaya Musha.

  1. This is obscene. Giving a play by play analysis of a Gadol’s life is highly intrusive; I would expect that he would appreciate privacy, especially when ailing. Wouldn’t you?
