Rav Elyashiv Reiterates: It is Assur to Go on the Har Habayis

rav-elyashiv2Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv has reiterated his previously expressed p’sak – shared by all gedolei haposkim of this and previous generations – that it is halachically forbidden for Yidden to ascend to the Har Habayis. Rav Elyashiv told this to Israeli President Shimon Peres today when the latter visited him in his sukkah in Meah She’arim.

Peres, who makes it a practice to pay visits on Sukkos to the Chief Rabbis of Israel as well as to Chacham Ovadia Yosef, had not previously visited Rav Elyashiv.

Peres raised the Temple Mount issue in light of renewed hostilities between Muslim religious authorities and small groups of Jews who choose to ignore the halachic prohibitions, thereby provoking Muslim antagonism, such as the call by Muslim leaders to safeguard the Har Habayis area.

Such calls were issued recently after the pre-Yom Kippur visit by a group of non-Muslims to the compound sparked disturbances on the mount and elsewhere in the Old City. The security concerns prompted by those calls, as well as by the discovery of wheelbarrows filled with rocks in the Aksa Mosque, led police to restrict access to the compound, which in turn, led to more Arab riots in the capital. Access to the mount is still restricted today to Muslim men over 50 with Israeli ID cards and to women.

Arab rumors have since been circulating regarding Israel excavating under the Har Habayis and Jews’ plans to ascend the mount.

Aside from halachic prohibitions, said Rav Elyashiv, it was important to consider that any provocations on the part of Jews who are determined to reach the Har Habayis could lead to needless bloodshed and further condemnation of Israel by the nations of the world.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Rav Elyashiv gave Peres a special bracha, saying to him: “As President you need a special blessing to steer the nation on the right course in these difficult times.”

  1. anonymous is saying shtusim – we’re talking about an issur kares here buddy, agreed upon even by the mizrachim(except a few ‘rabbis’ who think it’s more important to show jewish pride by going up and being chayav kares) – rav elyahsiv is saying that this is an isser kares; you are underminisng the authority of the posek hador – you can choose, like many in america do, to follow your community-posedk or your rebbe or whoever, but crocks on yom kippur is a machlokes – in america, many are noheg to be meikil – everyone legitimate agrees on this issue though – it’s a psak from the gedolei hador, end of story.

Your chutzpah is shameless – on hoshanha rabbah the fate is sent to shomayim, dont you even care that you just mocked and besmerched the name and halachik reputation of the posek hador?

I guess you shouldn’t follow reb moshe either, since he, gasp, didn’t allow music!! fanatic(chas veshalom)!!! Maybe you just dont understand that crocs are a SHAILA – maybe you cant get this past your tumah-rotted-americanized brain, but just because YOU do not think something is a shial, does not make it so! you are not the gadol hador, I presume, and have no authority – now, I am an ignoramus in many areas – i admit that i woefully lack knowledge – be honest and be nichnah to the poskim, drop the arrogance and have emunas chachamim.

  2. Agree with number four. If it wasn’t so serious it would be funny. People today are so stupid they think they can open their mouths against people who they can’t even grasp the shear knowledge of.

  3. I’m curious what the reason is for the issur.

(and please don’t tell me that it is because we’re all tamei — we all know that. What I want to know is what is the issur in going up on the Har to an area that we know for sure was not occupied by the Beis HaMikdash.)

    The Wolf

  4. Matis you are getting too hostile and angry at others. Calm down.

Rav Elyashuv’s psak is to reduce the riots, fights, demos, and vild of the Arabs who do not want Jews on Har Habayis. This is not any particular new, innovative or particular psak. The problem is there is no way to appease the ARAB NATION except if all Jews in the world join the Islamic Nation or commit suicide, something not happening ever.
The Mufti of Yerushaylaim would not make peace with Rav Sonnenfeld or Rav Bengis…so you can be sure they are not ready to accept an olive branch at any time near.

  5. Rav Elyashiv’s psak is nothing new, the chareidi poskim have always forbidden going up to Har Habayis. It’s clear to anyone who investigates the topic and doesn’t turn off their brain that we know where the makom hamikdosh was not, and that there are places that can be visited without any issur whatsoever.
