rav-yosef-shalom-elyashivMaran Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, the posek hador, after being told about yesterday’s shameful protest in Meah Shearim by so-called chareidi Jews who refused to let an Egged bus pass through the streets since the bus does not provide separate areas for men and women, said that gender segregation cannot be enforced publicly.

“Rav Elyashiv feels that it is commendable for a private bus company to separate men and women, but it is impossible to obligate a public company to adopt this standard,” said Reb Chaim Cohen, a gabbai of Rav Elyashiv. “You can try to persuade them. You can explain to them that it is a smart financial decision. But you cannot force a public company to do something like this.”

The number one bus route which ran through Meah Shearim had been rerouted to avoid the area for eighteen months due to attacks by some protestors who wanted the bus to enforce separate areas for men and women.

The bus resumed its run through Meah Shearim on December 1. At yesterday’s protest, 100 men who used their own bodies and baby carriages to block the bus. It was the first demonstration against the bus line.

  1. Devarim shel Taam. It’s unfortunate that there is a lack of sechel amongst a small number of us, and that they endanger our efforts to live with a higher standard of znius, by trying to force it on others, and making us look like the Taliban.

They are giving credence to the complaints of Hillary Clinton and her friends.

You shouldn’t need the Posek Hador to tell us this.

  2. According to the media here in Israel, they were protesting the busses not because of Tznius, rather because of the danger they cause whilst manouveing the extremely narrow street of Meah Shearim

  3. This is a very well written article, thank you Yair Alpert. Unfortunately however, it is a fine specimen of Israel news reporting in the sense that it skewed, slanted, and contains false information.

The reason why the residents are opposed to the bus routes passing through their neighborhood is because of the extreme danger that the buses present.

This may sound like a far fetched concern but anyone who has ever experienced walking on the sidewalk of Meah Shearim St. with an Egged bus barreling in their direction knows what a fearful experience it is.

The residents have every right to protest in a peaceful manner and it is sad that they where reduced to this situation where they have no other option but to take to the streets.

This concern is not a new issue at all. back in the day when numerous bus lines where running through Meah Shearim, anyone who experience the fear of being pedestrian vs. bus expressed their astonishment that bus line were allowed to pass through the area.

I am quite surprised at this anti chariedi slant. it is quite clear to anyone who was present or saw pictures of this episode that the protest was not due to unsegregated bus routes rather due to the physical danger that they present. there were parents and children holding picket signs which read “please stop endangering our lives” and there were posters posted in advance explaining these concerns.

It seems that this misinformation may have been garnered from the jerusalem post http://www.jpost.com/Headlines/Article.aspx?id=249271
or other anti chariedi news outlets.
We need to stop the chariedi bashing and show more support for our brethren. it is shameful that now even frum people are joining arms with these anti frum groups.

  5. As R’ Binyomin Eisenberger would describe – “A chasid without a tzaddik”. It’s wrong what they’re doing. If they continue even with R’ Elyashiv clearly against them it shows that they are for themselves and not for truth.

  7. The inherent physical danger of the busses, as well as spiritual dangers brought on by uncensored, inappropriate advertising on the exterior walls of the busses, are conveniently omitted, when asking the rav! often enough it is only the gabbai who speaks his will, and even when the gedolim respond, it is to a biased, misleading and misinforming question?

  8. So all of you who support this psak, are you also going to make sure you don’t talk on your cellphones while driving? It’s all or nothing in this game.

  9. to the author: “so called chareidi jews”

Newsflash: these ARE chareidi jews, no matter how much you attempt to disassociate yourself from them.

  10. To Leo, Zahavi, and similar echoes:

Your assessment is quite naive – to say the least. The Hebrew commentator above has aptly explained that Rav Elyashiv has specifically told those who asked him that that which was reported in his name is FALSE! Instead of continuously beating a dead horse – I would ask the readers to search the news item and see what I have explained already. (Sorry – I don’t mean to sound empirical, but the entire issue has been too media-dominated; stretched, bent, twisted, distorted, flipped inside out, and exploited in a way that obscures the REAL issue and its special need in today’s crammed and congested daily bus scenario.

Oh! And how you wise and sensible people bow and admire the mega-hypocrosy of her Majesty; Hillary Clinton, totally oblivious to her lopsided political record, and that of her “faithful” law-abiding husband – accepting their “words of wisdom” more seriously than they themselves do…
