barkat-rav-elyashivYerushalayim Mayor Nir Barkat paid a visit to Maran Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv today at his home at 10 Rechov Chanan in Meah Shearim in honor of Pesach. During the course of conversation, Rav Elyashiv told the mayor, “We must not ignore the United States. They must be listened to.”

Rav Elyashiv was commenting on the recent tension between Israel and the United States over building in East Jerusalem.

The seven-minute meeting was also attended by Deputy Mayor Yitzchak Pindrus.

Pindrus mentioned efforts by Barkat to reduce chillul Shabbos in the capital, but the conversation quickly shifted to the most burning issue: the tension with the U.S. over building in Yerushalayim. Rav Elyashiv related that Israel must not ignore the United States, which he called a malchus shel chessed, and added that “We we need much rachamei Shomayim.”

  1. I am surprised by Rav Eliyahiv’s advice on how the Israelis should respond to US, but we believe in Daas Torah. That is why we have gedolim.

  2. The Lubavitcher Rebbe, z’tl, never, ever, suggested that Israel should back down to US pressure, which could place yidden in danger, r’l. Israel must remain strong.

  3. I find it hard to believe that the Rav even hinted to stop building or to give up any part of Yerushalayim…my guess is he told him to take it easy in “how” he does things.

  4. Israel/American relations are more important than Shmiras Shabbos?! This needs more hezber. Matzav, did you give us the whole report here?

  5. # 7 – Maybe we shouldn’t try to second-guess the Rav, Shlita. If people regard him as the Gadol Hador, or at least the Gadol of Eretz Yisroel, then they should pay attention even when he says things they don’t like.

True Daas Torah is beyond all ‘isms,” ncluding Zionism and National Religious.

In addition, for Israel in these times to try to go it alone without the US backing it up would be being someich on a nes, and we are forbidden to do that.

  6. #1,2 it doesnt matter what it seems to you, you just have to listen to what they say, like chazal says if daas torah tells you that your right is your left and your left is your right you listen to them. I am sick of ordinary people arguing with the gedolim

  7. #7 You are probably the only one on the target.

Take it easy can mean many things, are we ready to put this in writing or announce a decision of no more building in any area in Yerushalayim outside of the ’67 borders from Areas of Givat Shaul, Har Nof, Sanhedria M, Ramot Eshkol, Ramot, Nvei Yakov, etc.

  8. To #10:

Oh really???? Moshe Rabbeinu argued to Hashem to save the yidden after the incident with Chait Ha eigel.

Years ago, people sided with the Israeli goverment to give up land for peace. Look where that got us.

  9. Just to add to the daas torah shmuz.when you listen to daas torah that you understand that doesnt prove that you really beleive in daas torah, because it could be that your just listening to common sense. The real proof that you beleive in daas torah is when you listen to it even when you dont understand it!!!!

  10. And who is guaranteeing that the Gadol Hador did actually say these statements? Did the Gadol Hador give a WRITTEN statement? Are we to believe every story put forth by one Askan or another?
Why do we always have to rely on anonymous Askanim with questionable ?????? to a particular subject that’s vary important and get embroiled in a whole ugly ?????? without really knowing the truth? This is causing a tremendous ????? ? and ????? for people.

  11. People are not sure he said it, not sure if he means it literaly, I mean people are distraught when it comes to these koichi vioitzim yudi feelings, and besides whats such a big deal, if reb elyashiv says dont just ignore the leader of the most powerfull country in the world? why do we have to rack our brains, on this matter? isnt it, comman sense that america is the most powerfull country? and so why would anybody with comman sense ignore them, I am not talking about kachniks or settlers that live in the midst of hostile neighbors, and even when their family members get killed, they dont care and carry on living there, I mean das torah of a charedi gudol does not consider these suicidal shitas, and there still only remains, like always 3 aveiris we give up our life for and medinas yisroel is still not one of them
what the lubavitchi rebe meant I dont know we are not chabad most of us commenters, and so its not for us to worry about.

  12. What Rav Elyashev said should be heeded. Israel has its own political ends as its agenda, and that does not include what is best for Klall Yisroel. Hisgarus B’Umos which in this case means defying the USA which Israel needs for its survival would be a terrible mistake not to mention prohibited.

  13. “ . . .I hold that this assumption, that [having] the territories touch upon Pikuach Nefesh, is not in the least bit certain, and there are many military people who hold just the opposite, and that the peace that will ensue upon returning the territories will reduce much bloodshed. And I hold that of this there is no doubt, that when we will have peace the bloodshed, and we must take into consideration not only our situation in the middle east but our situation in the whole world, for when there is no peace in the middle east this causes instability in the entire world, and there is aggressiveness between the nations for their own sides, this [world] power pulls this nation [to its side] and the other pulls a different one to its side, and the arms race goes and increases, and in the end there will be war, and then what will be our lot? What value will all our expanded land have then, when nowadays they have weapons that can destroy entire cities and countries from far away? So of what relevance is the idea that we cannot give up or we are prohibited to give up our inheritance from our fathers? As if it is in our hands to begin with! Isn’t it [true] that even now, without the support of America, we could not survive even one month or less on our own. And all those who talk lofty talk, “Us! Us! We will be victorious!” They are merely arrogant poor people, which Hashem hates.”

  14. There is nothing unreasonable about what the United States is asking of the Zionist State; a complete freeze on _new_ construction in the occupied territories is an absolute /minimum/ _sine qua non_ for any serious negotiations with the Palestinians.

The suggestion that President Obama or Secretary of State Clinton are somehow “anti-Israel” is not only preposterous but offensive and _dangerous_; the United States remains virtually _unilateral_ in their _/overwhelming/ support_ of Israel- even if this administration may not be quite as _extraordinary_ and _unconditional_ as the previous one was. (perhaps unprecedented)

Have we forgotten not only how our greatest sages and leaders unequivocally condemned Zionism and warned of the dangers and tragedies it would bring, H’ Yishmoreinu, but even the entire model and approach for dealing with the umos ha olam in golus that we find in the Torah going back to how Yaakov Avinu dealt with Eisav?

Is something not wrong when it is now the _Orthodox_ who stand-out as being the most hardline and defiant?

I would like to suggest that people have a look at http://torahtruejews.org for more on these topics.

  15. “Israel/American relations are more important than Shmiras Shabbos?!

This is a matter of pikuach nefesh– preserving life.

One life is worth more than the Beis HaMikdash and the entire Eretz Yisroel.
