Rav Elyashiv: You Can Make the Bracha of “Shecholak” On Rav Chaim Kanievsky

rav-elyashivRecently, a yungerman visited the posek hador, Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv and asked him an intriguing question: Can one recite the bracha of “Shecholak meichachmaso liyerei’av on Rav Elyashiv’s son-in-law, Rav Chaim Kanievsky?

The bracha of “Shecholak meichachmaso liyerei’av” is customarily recited upon seeing a person who has been blessed with knowledge of the entire Torah. As is well known, Rav Chaim Kanievsky is a virtual boki in kol haTorah kulah.

Those present looked at Rav Elyashiv to see what he would respond. Without hesitation, the posek hador responded that there is no question that one may make the bracha on Rav Chaim.

rav-chaim-kanievskyThe yungerman then asked whether the bracha should be recited b’sheim umalchus. “Does that mean one can say the name of Hashem when making the bracha?” asked the yungerman.

Rav Elyashiv replied, “When I said that you can make the bracha, I absolutely meant a regular bracha with Hashem’s name.”

As is well known, each day, Rav Chaim Kanievsky learns Shas Bavli, Shas Yerushalami, Nach, Rambam, Shulchan Aruch, Mishnah Berurah and more. Over the course of the year, he also completes Medrash Rabbah, Medrash Tanchumah, Sifra, Sifri and Tosefta. He also says 10 perokim of Tehillim each day before davening, but this only takes up a small portion of his day. He also spends time writing his chiddushim and seforim.

Are you joking? There are 24 hours in a day how on earth can anyone do all this in ONE DAY?

Rav chaim still has to daven shachris, mincha, maariv which does not take 30 seconds. Eat, answer klal yisroel shailos and learn.

Now even if this is true what is the point of writing this stuff on the internet? Most people are just trying to be a mentch and be shomrei torah umitzvos and get very turned off when hearing the impossible.

many gedolim of yesteryear and even todays gedolim are against books on gedolim and writing this stuff publicly because it’s just not normal for the regualr humen beings to accomplish anything close to a Rav Chaim Kanievsky.

    Good year!

  2. If it was just to hear Rav Elyashiv say this m’furesh then fine. Otherwise, what in the world was the shaila??!! Knowing that Rav Chaim has such an intensive seder, of course he’s one of the chachmei hador! Ehr zol lang leben!

Rav Chaim does NOT COMPLETE this everyday. I just got off the phone with one of the shamoshim and he laughed and asked where this is being written and I told him this site!

    MATZAV.COM RESPONDS:
Read what it says. He finishes Shas each year, but he learns each of the aformentioned limudim every day. That was the intention of the statement that he learns Shas etc. every day. It doesn’t mean that he completes it every day, but rather that he learns it every day. This was verified by the writer with Rav Chaim’s own mishpacha.

  4. I believe there`s a small typo in the article, not each day but rather each year R Chaim finishes shas etc.

True, he finishes Shas each year, but he learns each of the aformentioned limudim every day. That was the intention of the statement.

  5. How can he find the time to learn. The advertisements that for a contribution to Vaad Harabbanim, the rav will personally daven for your needs certainly take up 23 hours a day. From the ads, one must assume that all he does all day and night is daven for people who give money to that cause and the dozen others with the same salss pitch. Isn’t it true.

  6. This is a response to comment number 1. Why take a beautiful story that we all can get inspired and learn a lesson from, and totaly miss the point. Its like saying lihavdel not to watch any sport games that you may play because they are much better then you and it may turn you off from the sport. No one is telling you that you have to be like R’ chaim or your a nobody, rather look how devoted someone is to learning and therefor it should inspire us to do and try our best. I doubt anyone else took that story the wrong way unless their lookin for a reason not to learn somethin beautiful from this story. And good year to you as well.

  7. The famous maggid Rav Yaakov Galinsky shlita was once at the siyum that Rav Chaim Kanievsky makes every year. It is said that he told R’ Chqim that his ( R’ Galinsky’s) berachos are greater then R’ Chaim’s. R’Chaim asked him “why?” he responded ” last year when I wished Maran Mazel Tov and said IY’H next year again another siyum on kol hatorah kulo, Maran said I’YH by you, too.
My beracha was fulfilled, Maran’s was not!!
