rav-elyashiv2Accompanied by the tefillos of tens of thousands of Yidden all over the world, the posek hador, Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, underwent surgery yesterday to repair an artery near his heart. The surgery was scheduled to take place at 8:30 p.m. Israel time but began a bit later.

Rav Elyashiv’s surgery was performed at Shaarei Tzedek Medical Center in Yerushalayim by Dr. Daniel Clair, Chairman of the Department of Vascular Surgery and a Vascular Surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic.

Shortly after 2 a.m. Israel time, it was learned that the surgery was, boruch Hashem, successful. Dr. Clair emerged from the operating room at approximately 2:15 a.m. and proclaimed, “”The operation of the rabbi was a success, greater than anticipated.”

With Rav Elyashiv having marked his 101st birthday two months ago, there was serious concern as to how his body would respond to the operation. Boruch Hashem, the doctors have issued positive reports.

Rav Elyashiv entered the operating room at about 9:30 p.m. and the surgery began close to 11 p.m.

Upon entering the operating room, Dr. Clair asked Rav Elyashiv for a bracha. Rav Elyashiv took his hand in his own and wished him a warm bracha for hatzlacha.

Immediately after the surgery, Rav Elyashiv was taken to a recovery room. Later, he was moved to a room in the coronary care unit at the hospital, where he will remain at least until Shabbos.

As reported extensively here on Matzav.com, yesterday, tefillos were recited all over the world for the success of the surgery. From the Kosel in Yerushalayim, to the levaya of Rav Yitzchok Dov Koppelman, to Yeshivas Ponovezh, Yeshivas Mir and all the large yeshivos in Eretz Yisroel, to chadorim across the world, to Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood and mekomos haTorah across North America, Tehillim was recited for Rav Elyashiv.

At the Kosel, a massive atzeres tefillah was held under the direction of Rav Shmuel Rabinovitz, rov of the Kosel.

In the coming days, Dr. Clair will remain in Eretz Yisroel to monitor Rav Elyashiv’s condition. Dr. Clair is expected to meet with various dignitaries, including President Shimon Peres, who will express his thanks to the doctor for his efforts in improving the health of the gadol hador.

Yesterday, as doctors conducted numerous extensive tests prior to surgery, Rav Elyashiv constantly held a Gemara Bechoros in his hands, learning from it at every possible moment.

About seven years ago, Rav Elyashiv underwent emergency surgery for a bleeding artery near the heart. Dr. Clair was flown in to perform the risky procedure. Just recently, after Rav Elyashiv had felt some weakness, Dr. Clair was consulted again and determined that the same artery had now weakened and a second surgery was needed.

The efforts of various askanim assisted in expediting the journey of Dr. Clair and a fellow physician along with their sensitive equipment through airport security. Using various contacts in the TSA and the Port Authority Police, the askanim were able to facilitate the passage of the two doctors and complex medical equipment from Newark Liberty International to Eretz Yisroel in cooperation with the directors of airport security, PAPD, the TSA, and El Al management.

The plane had been scheduled to land at 5:30 p.m. and the surgery was slated for 8 p.m., leaving little time for the equipment to be checked in through mandatory security procedures.

While many askanim and close family members were present at the hospital during the surgery and will continue to maintain a presence there while Rav Elyashiv is convalescing, Matzav.com has received a message to convey to the public to please refrain from visiting the hospital to inquire about Rav Elyashiv or simply to observe the activity there. This causes great disturbance to the hospital.

All are asked to continue davening for Rav Yosef Shalom ben Chaya Musha.

May Hakadosh Boruch Hu give Rav Elyashiv kochos and gezunt to continue leading Klal Yisroel for many, many more years, amidst good health.
