rav-gedaliah-anemer[Live levaya video link below.] It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Gedaliah Anemer zt”l, rov of Young Israel Shomrai Emunah of Greater Washington for five decades, rosh yeshiva of the Yeshiva of Greater Washington for over a quarter of a century, and av beis din of the Rabbinical Council of Greater Washington.

Rav Anemer was born in Akron, Ohio. In his early years, he learned at Mesivta Tiferes Yerushalayim in New York. In 1944, he went to Telshe Yeshiva in Cleveland, where he learned  under Rav Elya Meir Bloch zt”l until 1956. He received semichah and became rosh yeshiva of the Boston Rabbinical Seminary, a joint venture of the Lakewood and Telshe yeshivos.

In 1957, Rav Anemer and his wife moved from Boston to Washington and he became rov of the Young Israel when it moved into its first building on Eastern Avenue in Riggs Park.

After a few short years, the demographics of the Riggs Park community threatened the existence of the shul, which was losing members to other neighborhoods. Under the leadership of Rav Anemer, the shul created a branch in the suburbs where there was not yet a frum shul.

rabbi-gedaliah-anemer-2It was in 1961 that Young Israel Shomrai Emunah relocated to the leafy suburb from Washington. “There was no Orthodox community until we moved out here,” Rav Anemer once remarked. “We started davening in my house. A small shul was built a year later.”

Anyone who merited to speak to or meet Rav Anemer was immediately drawn in by his warmth and sensitivity. He was a man of sterling character and, together with his wife, impacted on countless Jews, bringing them closer to Torah. His Torah acumen and strong stances to maintain mesorah gained him great respect.

Things weren’t always easy as Rav Anemer built up his kehillah, but he was steadfast in his desire to bring Yiddishkeit to the Jews in Washington.

As rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva of Greater Washington and av beis din of the Rabbinical Council of Greater Washington, he served the community with great dedication.

The levaya will be held this morning at Young Israel Shomrai Emunah of Greater Washington, located at 1132 Arcola Avenue in Silver Spring.

  1. As a native Washingtonian who grew up in Washington before Rabbi Anemer came, you have had to see the growth of Torah in that town from a desert to an oasis because of his dedication and love of Torah and Jews. A remarkable eved Hashem who has an amazing Olam Haba waiting for him. A wonderful role model for others to follow.
